Jack had accepted that he would die today.

He fought to keep his hands steady as he secured his chest plate. He could feel his heartbeat in his ears as he pulled the helmet over his head. He felt as though he had tunnel vision with it on, as if he could only see what was right in front of him. His knife was strapped around his waist where it always was but in his hands he held a sword.

He had never used a sword during his service to the Witch, but it felt right in his hands. The hilt was pure gold and it was perfectly balanced, as though it was made especially for him.

As they began their march to the battlefield, he ventured into his thoughts. Armor clanked and the sound of swords being sharpened was all around him. The noise was deafening, causing him to wince at each scrape of the blade.

By the time they reached their mark, he had come to a decision.

Jadis rode in front in a chariot pulled by two polar bears. She stopped on her mound, wand in hand and murder in her eyes. Around her neck was the mane of Aslan.

Even his hair seemed to be staring into Jack's soul, reminding him of who he was.

The Narnians stood adjacent to them, seeming much further away than they really were. It seemed like miles between them. Seeing them standing there, in the flesh, made Jack hyper-aware of just how real this was. Of just what was about to happen.

"I have no interest in prisoners," Jadis spoke coldly, "Kill them all."

Their men surged forward, closing the gap between the two armies. The Narnians stood their ground, none of them making any move to engage in the battle that was mere seconds from collision.

"Look to the sky!"

Jack, who still hadn't moved, shifted his gaze upwards. Griffins flew towards their army from all directions, dropping boulders into the enemy ranks.

He had to admit, it was a pretty good move.

In the distance, he heard the distinct shouting of Peter. "For Narnia! And for Aslan!" Their army rushed forward, ready to meet their opponents. Jack heard the sound of metal on metal as the two armies collided, both fully engaged in the battle.

By the time Jack brought himself to pick up his feet and run, he was certain about his decision.

He was going for the kill.

His vision was red. He struck down whoever stepped in his path. He was heartless. Cold-blooded. Those who crossed him would receive no mercy. He briefly wondered when war crossed the line into murder.
