"Hi, Andieeee!" Jack dragged out the last syllable of the girl's name, a cheeky grin plastered across his face as he threw the snowball he'd formed only moments earlier.
The girl below him let out a sigh of annoyance, spinning in all directions before finally spotting him above her, perched on a tree branch. She narrowed her eyes at the blond - presumably ready to tell him off for being 'so bloody immature' - who was now lazily slumped against the middle of the tree.
"Honestly, Jack, don't you have better things to do than sit in trees and-" The girl didn't get the chance to finish her sentence before another snowball was launched at her face, the instigator letting out small giggles from above her.
During his years of service, Jack had made quite a name for himself in the forest - meaning that anyone he came across soon learned to steer clear unless they wanted to fall victim to his endless shenanigans. Poor Tumnus, the faun who lived just around the corner, was often subjected to Jack's mischief as he was the only one who came through the woods frequently.
Pulling pranks was his only source of fun. Being a servant to the Witch, his days weren't exactly full of sunshine and rainbows. Narnia as a whole was quite the opposite, really.
"Andie, you've got a little something... everywhere." Jack burst into another fit of laughter, nearly losing his balance in doing so.
However, in his outburst, he failed to notice that the girl below him had begun to scale the tree he was in. In fact, he was so entertained with himself that he was in complete oblivion as she situated herself on the branch he was resting on, rolling her eyes at the sight of him.
By the time he calmed himself down and became aware of the presence beside him, she had already proceeded to push him out of the tree, watching with amusement as he landed in the soft sheet of snow beneath him.
"I could freeze you right now," he threatened jokingly, "you wouldn't be so smug then, now would you?"
"At least then I wouldn't have to hear your voice," Andie retorted, earning a glare from the boy on the ground, who simply stuck his tongue out at her. "So tell me, Jackson, what exactly do you do in these woods all day?"
Jack's shoulders stiffened. He hoped she hadn't noticed his struggle to keep his expression even. "Well, Andra, that information is top secret." This earned him an eye roll.
He wanted so desperately to tell her everything. To let the truth pour out. Something about her made him want to share his darkest secrets, to spill his guts.
But that wasn't an option.
Jack was a servant to the White Witch. He patrolled the woods every day in search of any humans who might have somehow wandered into the vicinity. Though he had never seen a Son of Adam or a Daughter of Eve - as they were so often referred to as - Jadis often reminded him that if he found a human wandering in the woods, he was to immediately turn it over to her.
Jack didn't know what she would do once the human was in her possession, but he had a feeling she wasn't just inviting them over for tea.
He'd been in service to the Witch since the day he woke up. It had been a hundred years, but it felt like an eternity. The days had started to blur together after a while. He didn't know anything about his past or where he'd come from. All he knew was that he'd woken up one day and the Witch was there, giving him orders.
In return for his service, the Witch granted him ice powers - which weren't nearly as amazing as they had sounded at first. Sure, he could summon snowballs at will, freeze anything he touched, and shoot some icicles at people, but it was nothing like the magic that the Witch had. He couldn't freeze anyone and even forming ice took a lot of his energy. Jack wasn't sure why she'd even bothered if it was a practically useless ability.
She had insisted, though, telling him that he needed every advantage he could possibly get.
Jadis would do anything in her power to stop the prophecy from coming true. The prophecy that, if fulfilled, would bring about her end.
While Jack would gladly let the Witch meet her end, he refrained from doing so, knowing that her end also meant his end.
He had to remind himself of who he was. Of what he was. He may have lived in solitude for a hundred years, but he knew the dangers of making friends. Of getting close to someone. He had a duty, whether he liked it or not.
Andie was not his friend.
Andie could not be his friend.
"Jack? Jack!"
The boy was torn away from his thoughts, his eyes landing on the girl in front of him, an annoyed look on her face. He neutralized his expression, keeping his voice cold and distant. "What?"
If she noticed his sudden change of demeanor, she didn't show it. "Did you hear that?"
"Hear wh-" The pair froze at the sound of a snapping twig. Rustling leaves followed by crunching snow prompted Andie to pull the hood of her cloak over her head and run towards the noise. As Jack followed closely behind, he felt a sudden shift in the air. He quickly glanced at Andie, who was crouched behind a bush; it didn't seem as though she'd noticed.
An uneasy feeling settled in the pit of the boy's stomach. He felt...warmer, almost. The harsh frigidness of the eternal winter washing away just a smidge. The blond was apprehensive as he realized that this was not the first time he'd felt this way. Just days earlier, the same feeling had overcome him.
The day he and Andie met for the first time.
He felt a sense of déjà vu as they watched from their hiding spot. The rustling of the leaves. The wave of warmth that followed. It couldn't have been a coincidence.
His stomach dropped as he realized what it all meant.
His suspicions were comfirmed when he looked up from his hiding spot just in time to see a young girl with short brown hair, presumably around 9 or 10 years old. With her was a boy with hair so dark it was almost black, who couldn't have been much older.
The unsettling feeling in the pit of Jack's stomach grew stronger.
The two children were human.
Andie and Jack did not speak another word to each other before taking off in opposite directions.

***
not to be dramatic or anything but i'd die for jack
sure, he's got a dark side bc he works for the witch but like...he's not all bad
he just has some ~issues~
also, if it wasn't obvious, the pevensies are going to be a little older than their canon book ages, bc edmund was like nine in lww, so that would be hard to work with considering andie is 16 lmao
obviously the romance won't happen until later parts of the book, bc even though they are aged up, they're still babies imo
