"All my life, my heart has sought a thing I cannot name."
- André Breton

"Come on, humans! While we're still young!"

The sun was beating down from the middle of the sky, though the air was still cold. The light that bounced off the snow created a harsh glare, making it hard to look straight ahead without squinting. Everything was silent with the exception of Mr Beaver who, every few minutes, would tell the group behind him to hurry up.

Andie wasn't sure how long they'd been walking. They had risen with the sun, eaten their breakfast, and set out on their journey. Beaver was sure they'd reach Aslan's camp before the day was through but Andie had her doubts.

The white expanse in front of them seemed never-ending.

"If he tells us to hurry one more time," Peter complained, bending down to hoist Lucy onto his back, "I'm gonna turn him into a big, fluffy hat."

Peter's comment elicited half-hearted laughs from the girls, who were no doubt feeling just as drained as he. They had walked for miles without a rest. Without so much as a drink. Now that they were crossing the frozen lake, they would not be able to stop until they reached the other side.

Stopping in the middle of the lake would leave them exposed. It would be a rather unsafe proposition.

"Hurry up! Come on!"

"He is getting a little bossy," Lucy commented, tiredly.

It was Mrs Beaver's turn to shout back to the humans. "No, behind you! It's her!"

It was at that moment that Andie heard the bells for the first time. Jingling bells, similar to what one would hear at Christmastime, sounding in the distance. Despite the cheerful notes they created, the sound was enough to strike fear into anyone's heart. They were faint, which indicated that they were still far away, but unnerving all the same.

Andie's heart pounded as she whipped her head around. Her eyes landed on the sledge, imperceptible from where they were standing. It was getting closer every moment, however, and she feared that they would not be able to outrun it.

Andie stopped running.

She had been unable to buy the Pevensies time when the wolves attacked the dam. The courage that Aslan insisted she possessed had completely vanished as she heard them clawing at the wood. The howls and snarls that escaped their mouths had paralyzed her with horror.

She had felt a strange sense of déjà vu, as if she had been in that position before. Encountered those wolves before.

She couldn't bear to face them.

However, she would never again let her fear prevent her from fulfilling her duty.

She would stay and face the Witch. The others would get to safety and would make it to Aslan's camp before Jadis ever found them. She would sacrifice herself for the safety of the Kings and Queens.
