Brite opened his eyes. He saw golden light filter through into his sight. An entire month had passed since they had left Redrig's spire. They took delivery work where they could find it. They travelled to many different towns and villages to keep supplies and funds up.
They didn't actually have to use their new gear, but it's mere existance was a bandit deterrent. Brite had also figured out how some of the functions of the Peace Armor. He had learned how to make the helmet disappear so he could show his face. He also learned that the displays allowed him to log items that were given to him.
Brite was even allowed on deliveries sometimes. He was able to keep up with the pace of Frost and Fern so they would help each other overcome obstacles and roadblocks.
Fern and Tessra taught Brite how to fight by training with him every day. They used their real weapons, because they found out that any wooden weapon Brite used would just explode in a flash of light and splinters. Tessra was proficient in every form of melee weapon, so teaching him how to use a sword was easy for her.
Fern taught Brite how to move in a fight. Dodging and parrying attacks seemed to come naturally to Brite. His reaction timing was incredible, and his ability to think fast also came in handy.
While Tessra and Fern taught him the art of battle, Frost taught him the art of language. He would teach Brite how to say and write simple phrases. He would have to repeat his words very few times. Brite was a quick learner, and it seemed he liked spending time with Frost.
They had learned many things about each other. Like how Frost's favorite food was raw freshwater fish, or how hey both had dreams of growing up to be heroes. Brite had asked him what a hero was. He had been told that they were someone who protected others with all of their strength, and pulled through to always saved everyone. That was when Brite stood up and said that he and Frost would become heroes.
At the time Frost had giggled a small bit, but he saw how genuinely kindhearted that Brite was. If they saw any travelers struggling along the road, he would always stop to help them no matter how much time or effort it would take.
This stranger who owed nothing to anyone seemed to always have the generosity to give his all for others. Frost admired this trait about him.
They had stopped in this small town in the forest called Barkhold. They would look for jobs here and see if there were any potion ingredients and food they could gather in the woods.
A local farmer allowed them to use the spare space in their barn to sleep for the night for a cheap price. This brings us to now when Brite has just awoken on a pile of golden hay with the light of the morning sun grazing over his face.
He sat up to take in his surroundings. The light was leaking through creases and holes left unpatched in the old wood ceiling of the barn. Bees flitted around and paced through the air over Brite's head in between the cracks in the building and a hive in the corner. He had chosen to sleep on a higher part of the barn that was used for storage. He liked being close to the sky.
He stretched out his arms and got on his feet to brush the hay off himself. He looked at the ladder that led down to the lower floor of the barn. He was not one who liked to start off his days simply. Instead of using the ladder he just jumped all the way down. He had found he was quite capable of being able to land safely from great heights.
He hit the dirt ground with a thud. Fern, who was right next to where Brite had touched down, jumped into the air and landed on all fours with a startled expression over his face. Frost was sitting cross legged on the ground and counting over their supplies. He suppressed a laugh at the sight of a hair raised Fern. Fern composed himself and got up to look at Brite in the Face. Brite wore his usual cheery smile.
"Good morning Fern."
" Good morning!? You nearly scared an entire year off my life!"
Fern shot a look over to Frost.
"And why weren't you scared? He hit the ground like a falling tree limb and you just sit there and laugh."
Frost just smiled at him.
"I think we should all share in Brite's excited morning energy."
"Morning Energy!?"
Brite looked around at the barn floor. He saw several dirty stables that held cows with horned shoulders. Frost had told him that they were called mura. Farmers would use them to gather a protein rich milk that would be sold in markets.
The floor had hay strewn about in random splotches. That would be from the large piled up bales of hay in between the stables. The barn doors lay open so Brite could see a stream with flowers dotted along it's banks. There were also two great trees on the side of the stream.
Birds chirped and whistled to signal the new day as insects moved around the flowers in circular motions. It was a day with very few clouds so the sun was able to be as light bringing as ever.
None of these things were what Brite was looking for.
"Where is Tessra?"
He asked as he sat down next to Frost.
"She went out for a jog through the forest."
Frost said. Fern sat down with them and pulled out a small bag around his waist.
"Honestly for a human she has a serious thing for exercise."
He procured three pieces of dried meat from within the bag. He passed one out to Brite and Frost. This was from a kind of green rabbit that they had hunted that week. They dried the meat so they could use it as rations later on their journey.
Frost chewed down on the meat with sharp canines, but Brite refused the meat. He had refused to hunt any animals and to eat any meat since they had been together. He had strictly been eating whatever kinds of plants he could find along the way.
He knew that he couldn't stop others from hunting or eating meat so they could live. He himself was just adversed to taking a life of any kind.
Fern shrugged and bit hard on his piece.
"She should be back any moment now."
Frost began collecting together all of the gear he had been checking.
"As soon as she comes back we should head into the town to see if there are any jobs."
"If you could call it a town."
A voice had called out from the front of the barn. It was Tessra. She stepped into the barn and took off a gauntlet to brush some sweat off her brow. Fern swallowed his bite and smiled at her.
"You're back."
"I just wanted to to some scouting around the area, and as for what I saw of the town is that it's more like some buildings along a road."
She walked over to where they were on the ground but she did not sit.
"If you have all your gear checked we should head out and see what we can find for work."
Brite sprang up and seemed ready to take on whatever lie ahead.
"Yes!"
He said with excitement. Frost packed up the last few things as he held a piece of the dried meat still in his mouth.
"Ok finished."
He said with the meat still hanging out of his mouth. All three of them got up with Tessr and strode out the door ready to face whatever lay ahead. Brite sped up to the front of the group, and then he looked behind him to his friends.
"Let's go!"
