44: Misunderstanding

"Mitch, these Affected... they're getting out of hand." Jerome said. They had already broken up a couple fights but there were still fighting going on.

Mitch sighed. "I know... I hope they come back soon...""

"Maybe if we unlock our Essence, we can make things easier."

"The past Virtues haven't unlocked them, Jerome." Mitch answered.

"They didn't try." Jerome corrected him. "With just four of us here, we can't do much but what if we find a way to unlock our Essence."

Mitch paused for a moment, trying to think back about what Seto said about Essence. According to Seto, Essence refers to the abilities that the Virtues can use, similar to the aura that he uses. They're based on the individual and many factors surround Essence itself.

It was said that Virtue is born with the potential to have one but not every Virtue will unlock their Essence. There is no known way to unlock it as it is conditional but the conditions are unknown. The last reincarnations had no Essence whatsoever and it was believed that they were long gone.

"Biggums... The Virtues before us had no Essence." Mitch reasoned. "We don't even know where to start."

"Essence is conditional right? This is a situation that we need right now!"

"I wish that's how things work...."

"Hey Jerome."

The two turned to see Quentin, in a far distance, waving at the two.

"Quentin...? What are you doing alone?" Mitch asked. "I thought you were supposed to be with Ty."

"Never mind that, I need to talk to Jerome." Quentin gestured at Jerome to come towards him. Jerome looked at Mitch, confused at first before heading over to Quentin. Mitch watched as Quentin gestured Jerome behind the house.

"Wonder what Quentin wanted from Jerome..."

Mitch's thoughts went back to the Essence. He wasn't sure how exactly the Essence works but just as Jerome said, it would make things a whole lot easier. Perhaps the Essence can even help with the Affected... Virtues with Essence typically spread their effects better than those that don't have Essence.

"How do one unlock their Essence..." Mitch wondered.

There was a light tap on his shoulder, he turned to see Jerome had come back. "That was pretty fast..." Mitch looked pass Jerome at the corner where he last saw Quentin, frowning a bit.

Jerome smiled at him without saying anything.

"We should go inside and take a break for now"

Jason's head pounded as he got up from the ground, placing his hand on his forehead. "Ugh..." He looked around, finding himself in some sort of a run down village. "Where am I now?"

"Kindness..." Envy was relieved to see that it was Kindness that he had brought to his small safe area. He was about to ask if he was ok when Jason took a step back.

It was as if the world froze for him. "Kind... ness...?" He spoke slowly, wondering what he did wrong.

"You... why did you do that...?" Jason muttered.

"I had to... It was to save you."

"I was with my friends... I was with them..." He continued. "W-what do you want from me?!"

"What are you saying, Kindness?"

"You.. you're the reason why I'm in here in the first place!" Jason exclaimed. "You said that this world was in danger but that was all a lie wasn't it?!"

"I wasn't lying when I said that." Envy stated. "This realm... it really is falling apart..." He took a step towards Jason and he stepped backwards.

"Kindness..." Envy looked up at the Virtue's face. Instead of the thrilled look he was expecting, it was an expression of fear. "Kindness...?"

In the next moment, Jason took off, running away from Envy.

"Kindness... why... why are you running?!" Envy shouted. Jason didn't answer or did he look back at Envy. He continued running, hoping that his legs would keep going

Different emotions went through Envy while he tried to catch up with Jason.

At first he was puzzled. Confused as to why Kindness would take off like that. He had just rescued him, there was no reason for him to run anymore. There was nothing to be afraid of anymore.

Then it was anger. He was mad that Jason didn't even thank him or at least give him a smile, anything to show that he was grateful. And now he's refusing his help.

Why....

Why...?!

Envy's arms emitted black smoke as his breathing turned irregular. His train of thought was lost as his vision turned black.

The presence behind him had grown frighteningly different, causing Jason to shudder. Jason peeked behind him to see what was happening and immediately wished that he hadn't.

Envy's face was covered in black, much like what Jason had on his arm. There was black smoke around him as well and Jason noticed that everything near him was turning gray and withering away. The pathway that Envy took has withered grass and plants, dying as Envy passes them.

Jason's heart pounded as he forced his body to run faster, knowing that if he is near Envy, his body would end like the plants.

"Why?! Kindness... I saved you! Herobrine... Herobrine is coming soon."

Envy's emotion slowly subsided as he felt his heart wrench. His chest felt heavy and it was slowing him down. It grew heavier and heavier until Envy found himself unable to move. All he could do is watch as Jason continued to run further and further away from him.

He was dumbfounded, staring down at his body and clutching at his chest. "Wh... what is this...?"
