Ice continued to grow and Mitch was forced to retreat further back. The surrounding areas' temperature dropped quickly and Mitch was shivering. He couldn't imagine how cold it would be inside of the frozen terrain.
"Jerome!" Mitch shouted out. He couldn't see anything from here. It was practically all white. "Are you alright?!"
There wasn't any answer besides the cold howl of the wind.
As he took a step towards the icy area, Mitch gritted his teeth to it from chattering.
The inside was cold yet it didn't bother Jerome as much as he thought it would. He only wished his body wasn't affected by the freezing temperatures.
I have to keep moving... Jerome began walking forward towards Lust.
The Sin followed suit and the distance between the two closed quickly. The dark blue aura wrapped around Lust's arm and Jerome reacted quickly. Ice formed in front of him to block the punch.
Jerome emerges behind broken pieces of ice with Frostguard over his head. He swung it hard but Lust's forearm blocked it. His Artifact reacted, ice forming over the area it had struck. It formed much faster than before, the ice climbing up to his arm.
Lust stepped back with a cold glare. He flexed out his arm, cracking the ice.
Jerome felt like he hit a hard surface, not a body part. It's like he is wearing gauntlets. His gaze fell on the dark blue color around the Sin's arms. I just have to get past it!
Icicles shot forward and Lust threw up his arms to defend against it. Most of it had deflected off his arms but a few cuts formed on his legs. Lust reached down and pulled out an icicle and tossed it aside.
"This cold and icicles...." Lust's jaws clenched as he advanced forward. "Isn't that what you used to kill him?"
Jerome suddenly recalls the time when he gained consciousness and the first thing that he saw was that monster's claws. In the next second, the entire area froze over with icicles piercing through the monster. That monster was no other than Greed.
And they had killed him.
"... I'm sorry..."
"Sorry?" Lust spat out. "Do you think an apology will fix things!?" He launched himself forward at a much faster speed than before. His fist hits a block of ice that formed in front of Jerome. The Virtue was sent flying back along with broken pieces of ice.
Jerome winced as his body hit the hard ground. He tried to get back on his feet but before he could, Lust kicked him. The front of his shoe digs into Jerome's stomach, knocking all the air out of him. His body skids back as he doubled over.
"No matter how much you apologize, it won't bring him back to life!"
Lust stomped his foot down onto Jerome's side. Jerome let out a pained shout as he can feel something crack. The Sin continued to strike him, each kick harder than the last. Ice had formed around Jerome's body to protect him but Lust easily broke through them.
Frostguard was out of his reach—the Artifact must have been dropped when Lust first kicked him.
It hurts to breathe. Jerome couldn't tell if it was from the cold or because of Lust.
They must have shared memories. Lust would have seen how Greed died.
And Jerome can see the long history between the two Sins. They were close—just like how he and Mitch were.
While Jerome feels guilty, Lust feels anger.
Lust grabbed Jerome's collar, pulling him upwards. Their eyes met but Lust seems to be too infuriated to control him.
"That scene is forever stuck in my head."
Jerome barely had time to react when Lust's fist connected with the side of his face. He saw stars for a split second as he heard a crunch.
The temperature dropped rapidly and ice began to form on their lower bodies. Lust didn't stop and pummeled Jerome left and right with his right hand.
Jerome tried to protect himself, taking the blows onto his arms. His body was going numb but Lust's punches were bypassing the numbness. Jerome can't seem to catch his breath. The next punch seems to be stronger than the last.
It was freezing just a second ago. Now Jerome feels nothing.
Through his blurred and disoriented head, Jerome can see that Lust was speaking. What...? Jerome thought. There were no words to be heard yet the Sin's mouth was still moving.
He was suddenly aware that the punches were growing lighter and much slower.
By now, ice had encased both of their legs. Even Lust was having trouble breathing.
"Did Avaritia... really die because of you?" Lust grabs the collar tighter. "Hey... Answer me..."
After a few seconds, he loosened his grip on the Virtue's collar when he saw that he was unresponsive. He pulls back his arm and the blue aura envelopes it. "... if you really are sorry.... then..." The blue flared up as he closes his fist. "Just die."
He heard rapidly approaching footsteps. Out of the corner of his eye, he spots someone emerging from the white-out. It was Mitch with a pained look on his face. As soon as he saw Jerome and Lust, his face changed to a determined one.
"Jerome...!" It was much colder in the center of his frozen terrain. Mitch forces his body forward regardless, Illumina taking the form of a bow.
Lust cursed under his breath as he rushes to deliver the final blow.
An arrow pierced through the arm holding Jerome, causing Lust to lose grip on the collar. He tried to catch Jerome but he was too slow. Another arrow was shot, going deep into his shoulder.
Lust tried to move to dodge the other arrow but the ice and the freezing temperatures prevented him from moving quickly. The arrow found its mark, penetrating through the Sin's chest. Lust's face twisted in anguish and then to rage. His legs broke through the ice and his arm was already swinging.
Mitch was in front of him with Illumina in the form of a sword. Lust's eyes widened as an image of Greed overlapped Mitch's face and his arm faltered. As the sword was plunged into his chest, only one thing ran through his mind.
Was... this how you lost... Armaros...?
