As I make my way through the firm this afternoon, I am welcomed back by several employees until I finally reach my office where I find someone sitting in my chair.
"Welcome back big brother!" Kyle exclaims swiveling around to face me. I cock an eyebrow as I close the door behind me and throw my briefcase on the couch.
"Move." He was up in an instant. "What are you doing here?" I let out a deep sigh and relax with my feet propped on the desk.
"I missed my older brother and couldn't wait until you got back," Kyle said with a hint of amusement in his voice. I open my eyes to see a suppressed laugh on his face. Laughter fills the room as I move to pour myself a drink.
"Dad wants to see all of us tonight at 8. He told me to let you know since he couldn't reach you." I sat on the edge of the desk and shook my head.
"Can't, I have plans already." I actually don't.
Kyle raised one of his eyebrows. "With the girl from the club? Isn't she a little young for you?" I glared at him and for a split second I considered that he might be right, but I shook the thought away.
"No and it's none of your business. Just tell David I'm not coming." He shrugged and made his way out after saying his goodbye.
Picking up my phone, I send a text to Ariah asking if she made it safely. As I began drafting a spreadsheet for the gathered investments over the week, I am stalled by my thoughts. A replay of earlier events swirling in my head. Women are a complex creation and in my years I've come across many; each unique in their own way. However, never in my life have I had a woman treat me with such normalcy. To say I was in awe would be an understatement. Most women would do anything for me and that was what I was accustomed to; getting what I want. I grew up not being able to have everything I desired, but once I made a name for myself, all of that changed. In my career and endeavors with women. Ariah was entirely different from those I've encountered. Not only was she younger, but she was strong-willed and feisty. Don't get me wrong, I'm not some perv seeking out younger girls. Usually, I don't entertain the likes of women younger than thirty; however, Ariah procured my interest.
Pushing my bottomless thoughts away, I start on the work I've been neglecting. After a few hours pass, I finish up and collect my things making my way out. As I make the drive to home, I glance at the clock noting that it was nearing eight. On an exasperated sigh, I head towards the much dreaded family dinner.
Pulling into the gates and parking around the four-tiered fountain in the driveway sends my mind flooding with childhood memories. I take a deep breath, mentally preparing myself for what tonight may bring. Strolling through the large, ornate glass doors, I am greeted with the familiar smell of snicker-doodle. I'm soon being smothered in motherly kisses and hugs. A fond smile graces my face as she stands back and stares at me, keeping her grip firm on my shoulders.
"Hey mom."
"Ah, my beautiful boy. I've missed you so." Her warm smile makes my otherwise stressful day pale. Her high cheek bones in place as her curls resting just above her shoulder blades.
"I've missed you too."
"Oh, come. Everyone's in the kitchen. I've made snicker-doodles while we wait for the food to finish." She drags me towards the source of the lovely smell. We enter and the air visibly shifts. I smile down at my mother as she lets me go to check on her food. I take a look around the table before taking my seat next to Kyle.
"Hey man, I thought you weren't coming." I simply shrug.
"David. Giovanni." I greet my other brother and father.
