Charles sighs. "The doctor said she had a heart attack. Mom had been having heart problems for a while now."
The pills I saw her taking.
"Why didn't anyone tell me?
"She only told me. And that's solely because I found one of her medical bills. She didn't want to worry you and Jade with it because she thought it would get better with her treatments and medicine."
I was taking deep breaths. "She's going to be okay right?" I asked as my voice cracked. Tears were flowing rapidly now. "She has to be okay Charlie."
Jade was now hugging me and crying.
"We hope so Ari." We were all hugging now.
Once they let go, I slowly sit back down. My hand remained wrapped around my mother's
"You must be the mysterious Silas." Jade says. I glance over at her and raise my eyebrows in confusion. "You know Jane Miller can't keep her mouth shut."
Shaking my head, I look over at Silas then back at my siblings. "Guys, this is my boyfriend, Silas. Silas, this is my older brother, Charles, and my little sister, Jade."
Jade smiles and waves. Is she blushing? Oh my god. Charlie stands and shakes Silas' hand.
"Nice to meet you both. Wish it was under better circumstances." Charlie nods and Jade looks down.
We were all just sitting around making small talk when the grip on my hand tightened. My eyes averted quickly.
"Mama?" I stood and got closer. "Mama, it's me Ariah. I'm here." The room was quiet. My mom was moving her fingers.
"I'll go get a nurse." Silas says while standing and leaving the room. No more than two minutes passed before he was back with a short, stocky woman with glasses.
She stands close to the bed speaking rather loudly. "Ms. Miller? Can you hear me? Nod if you can hear me Ms. Miller."
My gaze goes back to my mother nodding her head slightly. It wasn't much but it was something. She was responsive. The nurse began checking her pulse and doing other various things before she began typing on the computer. I studied my mom's face. Her eyeballs were moving behind her eyelids but they weren't opening. I needed to see her soft brown eyes.
Leaning down, I whispered to her through my tears. "Fight mama. You have to fight. I need you. We need you." A tear fell from my cheek to hers and I wiped it off.
I stood back up and as I did my mom held on tightly to my hand. Slowly, her eyes began to flutter open. They weren't open fully, but I could see her looking around.
The nurse comes to her bed side. "Ms. Miller, how are you feeling? Do you remember how you got here? You had a heart attack Ms. Miller."
My mom closed her eyes slowly then opened them again. She gave the nurse a slight nod. The nurse turns to us. "The doctor will have to come in and check on her then we will have to reduce the people in the room to two at a time."
So we sat and waited. Mom was weak so she couldn't keep her eyes open long. After she drifted off the sleep, Melissa knocked on the door softly and came in.
"Ariah, how are you feeling?"
"Better now that the pain is gone."
"Good. The doctor wishes to see you now. He's quite upset that you left your bed, but I told him there wasn't much I could do to restrain you."
Jade and Charlie began laughing beside me. I hit Charlie in the arm since he was the closest.
"If you would come with me." Silas and I follow the nurse out of the room and back to room I resided in before. Melissa begins checking my pulse and blood pressure. She made sure the stitches on my forehead were in tact. As she was finishing up, the doctor came in. He was a tall, fair skin man with ash blonde hair and glasses.
