-Last school burned down. - Blake says with a straight face. We all look around to each other, the clicking sound of cutlery and cups stop. Blake takes another bite from his chocolate éclair and looks away.
-Wait you're not just going to leave it at that? Right? - Liam says half-jokingly. To which Blake responds by looking down at his hands.
-Well this is getting awkward. Leave it. I'm sure clown boy will tell us all about it when he gets to know us better. You wouldn't tell a bunch of strangers all of your deepest trauma right, Liam? - I say trying to liven up the mood, which sort of works.
-This one will keep us busy: What is the best form of government? - Amanda who's been mostly quiet chimes in switching the mood of the group completely. Everyone has got their hands up and are speaking with mouthfuls of pastries.
-Communism obviously, becaus-
-No government, overthrow the government, burn everything!
-I think a Monarchy and I'd be king, obviously.
.
Later that day Jane and I go to our spot that overlooks the whole town. Jane is resting her head on my shoulder and I'm trying not to move to scare her away. There's a small puddle inside the big depression on the ground in front of us.
-Look Jane there's still a puddle from yesterday's rain.
-Do you think we'll get tadpoles? - Jane asks with dreamy eyes. It was already unlikely to rain once, to keep raining enough to make her dream of little baby frogs come true is a stretch.
-We can bring water bottles and keep filling it up? - Her eyes light up again.
-Yes! And we shall see them grow each time we come water them. - I hug Jane, she is so precious. I hope she stays that way forever.
-Do you think Jamie can come pick us up? After the third croissant I started feeling a bit tired. I think I need a nap.
Jane calls Jamie and he comes pick us up a third of the way down the hill. They drop me of at home and I walk right in. The front door is unlocked and slightly opened.
-Hey, Mom? Dad? - I hear a screech and I walk slowly trying to not make a sound. I bump into a box on the ground and fall on the floor.
-Aw.
-Hello honey, we're installing the new weather measuring system. Since yesterday's rain Dad and I have decided to try and track the weather changes and also get a heads up before the next rainstorm. It says on the box it can predict up to seven days of forecast.
-Awesome. Do you need any help?
-Yes, go outside and check the indicator in the front of the house. The screen on the inside isn't working yet. See if it's got any weather predictions.
-Ok. - I walk over the box I tripped over before and walk back to the front of the house. I now notice the panel with blinking lights and look at the little clouds and suns drawn on the screen. There's seven slots and all first four have some cloud with water drops in them, the fifth, sixth and seventh day has only clear skies with a sun smiling in sunglasses across the whole day.
-It says it's going to rain every day for 4 days but from the seventh day will be sunny for three days.
-Even today?
-Yes, it's raining at night.
-Things are going to be different in deep Town from now on. We should all buy weather proof clothes. - My dad says looking up from the huge instructional menu.
.
That night I don't sleep, turning over in my bed while listening to the unfamiliar sounds of rain and wind hitting the bedroom window. I dream I'm in a deep blue ocean all alone and I'm drifting with the tide. In the morning I dream there's an angel made of sunrays that picks me up and takes me to shore. When my alarm clock rings I open my eyes and the sunlight feels them. The storm is over, for now.
