Everyone look! - someone says as they look up at the huge statue of the school mascot in the middle of the cafeteria, an octopus wearing glasses with pens, rulers and calculators in each tentacle. The ceilings are extremely high so the statue is about 20 feet. On top of the octopus head sits a calm Blake Evans with his feet dangling. Of course, people start recording it for social media even taking some selfies to prove they are there.
-How long do you think he's been up there before anyone noticed? - Angela Jenkins asks.
-Watch out! - Blake screams at the top of his lungs, a worried look on his face. Suddenly all the juice fountains start spraying uncontrollably and there's orange, brown and pink beverages all over people's faces and clothes.
-Oh my god my eyes? - Angela says wiping away raspberry juice and lemonade from her face. - And now he's gone. How did he get down from there so fast? I'm not the only one who thinks he's a freak of nature right?
-Leave the conspiracy theories, Angela. It'll make you feel better. - Jane tells her politely. I don't say anything but I can't say I don't see Angela's point. I can't believe I just said that.
-What? I'm the only one who's sane here, I see. - Angela says this and walks away angrily.
.
The rest of the day nobody sees Blake at school and he's not active on social media either.
That afternoon it starts raining and there's lightening. Jane and I are walking to Jane's home to have a slumber party and we pass Blake's house. Blake is on the roof walking back and forth and when he sees us he freezes. Jane waves. He waves back.
-Maybe we shouldn't get along with him... he did cause the juice explosion in the cafeteria somehow. - I say looking attentively at Jane to see if she agrees.
-I don't know. I think if he has a tendency to put himself in trouble, he does need friends even more. Remember everyone from theater how lost they were before they started making connections and having people to trust? - Jane has a huge heart, the biggest I know. I just hope it doesn't get us in trouble.
.
When we get to Jane's house her Mom is baking chocolate chip cookies with walnuts in them. Jane's house always smells amazing but when her Mom bakes there's a heavenly aroma that feels up the small house. Jane's mom is a stay at home Mom so it's not uncommon to find her baking when I come over.
-Hi Mommy!
-Hi Mrs Murray.
-Hello sweethearts. The cookies are really hot, they're just done baking. Take a plate up to Jane's room and promise me you wait a bit before eating them.
We get to Jane's room and I sprawl across the bed looking up at Jane's decorated ceiling with collages of glittery things, polka dots and other cutesy things.
-Do you think he'll be expelled? Now that I've thought about it, I'd quite like giving him a role of a rebel that changes his heart for the better. It would be so fitting don't you think?
-You're talking about Blake again? I'm going to tell Jamie! - I joke throwing a pillow at Jane and she throws one back.
-I'm just worried about him. This town isn't so kind to different people. Will you help me make sure Blake gets on the right path? - I hesitate. I'm not sure how I feel about him yet.
-He hasn't shown he particularly wants to be on the right path.
-Hannah! - She makes the cutesy puss in boots eyes with a pouty lip. - Pleaseee. - I sigh.
-Okay. But if we find out something too messed up about him... you promise we walk away. Okay?
-Okay, okay. - Jane agrees even though I know when the time comes, she would try to bend the rules.
-Now, I think it's time for cookies!
-Yes, cookies!
