Immediate impacts

I'm floating peacefully at the mercy of the waves and I get to shore. Even though it's an island it looks just like Deep town with the desert's cactuses and coyotes. As I look at the ocean it gets replaced with sand. I walk for miles, my throat dry and I cough and fall down to my knees.

-Please. I need... water. - As if as a response the clear skies with the blazing sun quickly turn into a rainstorm. I open my mouth and dance in the rain. I trust the universe to provide.

I get kicked in the face and suddenly I'm wide awake. Jane is laying down next to me, her feet next to my head and my feet next to hers. She's snoring, loudly. My foot is wet somehow. It's raining outside but everything else inside is completely dry. Yuck, it's Jane's drool. I get up and walk to the kitchen where Jane's parents are having breakfast.

-Good morning. - They don't listen, their eyes glued to the tv. The local news is on and they are talking about Deep town's new weather developments.

-The consequences of the floods can be devastating. The immediate impacts of flooding so far include damage to property, destruction of crops and loss of livestock. If the rainstorm continues, we can expect the rise of waterborne diseases, the deterioration of health conditions and even the loss of human life. - The news presenter says with her regular tone of voice. She could be reading anything from the teleprompter and she'd still sound the same.

-Tomorrow it'll be sunny. Everything should be back to normal... right? - Jane's Mom smiles a weak smile and Jane's Dad keeps watching the news.

I'm in the back of Jamie's car watching the rain drops slide across the car window and then collide into each other.

-Hannah you agree with me, right? - Jane asks from the front passenger seat looking back at me. I didn't hear anything they were saying so I have no idea what to answer.

-Agree? With what? - Jane rolls her eyes.

-Sleeping beauty is a classic. It should be remembered as the beautiful animated movie and be passed down through generations.

-Right... ok.

-No! The original plot involves the princess being in a deep sleep and the only way to wake her is a prince having his way with her. - Jamie interrupts looking at me through the rear-view mirror.

-In the movie it's just a kiss. That's fine. You've got to agree with me Hannah. - Jane intervenes.

-Kiss or no kiss it's a bit creepy either way. I think I agree with Jamie, sorry Jane. - Jane lets out a deep sigh. After a moment she's back to her cheerful self with another completely random topic to discuss.

Angela Jenkins has a cardboard sign that says 'No rain on our parade. Kick Blake Evans out!'. Jane walks furiously towards her and grabs the sign.

-We haven't kicked you yet and you've caused nothing but trouble around here! - Angela has fear all over her face. She doesn't even attempt to speak. - I'll take this and you think deeply about what it means to ostracize someone.

-Yes! Brava! - Blake Evans cheers from across the hall walking towards us.

-Don't be so cheerful. You're going to explain to me exactly what happened in the cafeteria yesterday. - Blake's smile breaks for a moment but he quickly puts on a happy face.

-I'll tell you anything if you let me be the lead in the play.
