The natural weather is setting in. Clear skies, average temperature of 86°F. But there's a strange humidity in the air that isn't typical for the desert. Blake Evans has his shirt off and he's sitting cross-legged, meditating on the roof. He can feel his cells absorbing the energy that the weather offers him. But he can still feel his body is also trying to throw off the balance by creating his own weather conditions. This reaction happens with all teenager future keepers. Their bodies have a tendency to reject the last stage of becoming a keeper. They have to fight through this and stay very calm. It takes a day or a couple more and in the end of this process they become pure energy and something like a match ignites inside of them giving a new beginning to a whole new Universe. To the ones in Blake's Universe it might seem like he's got a tiny Universe within himself. But that won't be the case, it will technically be just as big if not bigger than the universe they're already in, expanding and contracting like Universes do.
In his mind there's two things competing for his attention. The importance of making his mom's last project before she passes work. And the hangout with the theater kids. His mind is simple like that. That's one of the reasons he feels like he shouldn't be a Universe keeper. Why would he be trusted with something so important if other than his magical half human body he's just a regular teen.
Growing up they moved a lot, trying different environments for him to prosper in. He always had a tendency to make it rain more than he did to make clear skies or any other weather conditions. Him ending up in a desert where he could feed off the opposite energy from his makes sense. But it also makes sense to him to be free from creating his universe and just enjoying this one. It even seems fitting to him that he would balance off the deserts dryness and offer his rain to the place. If he does that, he will be spending a lot of his magical energy and he won't be able to grow his universe. He'd be almost like a regular human. Which is what he wants.
But he cares too much for his mother. She's told him about how in his universe there would be everything from the very big to the very small. She talks about how it would begin, how it would evolve and how it would end. It would start from a monumental explosion of an infinitely hot and infinitely small point. Hundreds of seconds after it would be too hot for electrons to join atomic nuclei to make atoms, instead the Universe would consist of a swirling sea of sub atomic matter. Eventually everything would be made up of atoms. And later there would be life. And that part always made his mother tear up. She'd talk about the species that lived in his brothers and sisters universes wile wiping away tears with a tissue. His mother wanted this enough for the both of them.
As he's trying to meditate his mind fights him and it goes back to normal things like friends and freedom. His whole body is itching to not be still, to not keep going with the process. He knows he should fight this and stay still but his heart is in another place.
He opens his eyes, a cloud forms and covers the sun. He notices what he's done and tries to undo it, waving his arms around like he's trying to push the cloud out of the way. It ends up dissipating. He puts on his shirt and walks out the roof. He's going to enjoy himself. Isn't that what life is for?
