-Check it out, it's see trough, it's got pockets and you can see my outfit underneath and when I put things in the pockets you can see it as well! - Jane is super excited about her new raincoat. I try to show excitement but it comes out more like a yawn because I didn't sleep at all last night. I brought my Dad's old hiking parka. It's green and blue and even holographic on some parts. - Yours is so cute, is it a hand me down? I love vintage stuff.
-Good morning theater geeks. - Blake says to all of the theater club sitting on the floor of the stage.
-You're one of us now so what does that make you? - Liam asks jokingly.
-My whole life is a stage, I'm the geekiest theater nerd out there. - We all laugh but Jane frowns remembering the scene with his Mom, the teacher. Jane stands up and commands today's session.
-Today we won't be rehearsing the play. Since we are almost done with it, we can go back to basics today, emotion. Let's work on making what our character is feeling show trough and make the audience believe.
-I can cry on command! - Blake says excitedly and I turn to look at Jane's expression which shows no surprise.
-Show us what you've got. - Jane responds.
Blake slaps his face a bunch, turns in circles and messes up his own hair.
-Why would you do this to me... Dad? Why would you leave us and not leave a note? - thick real tears cascade down his face, there's even a bit of snot which he wipes away with the back of his hand. He cries for a few seconds then his face changes expression and he smiles charmingly and takes a bow. Everyone claps but Jane, who just nods.
-Right, I've never seen anything like that would you mind teaching us how to do it?
-I can't. That was real. When I'm smiling is when I'm pretending. I mean not really, it's not that bad but sort of...
-Okay... -Jane coughs. - Who's next? Maybe some anger? Liam? - Liam is a bit of a wild card, when he first joined he was so shy he wouldn't even say a word now he is known for his bursts of method acting. He hits his chest with his fists he runs around the stage and grabs a chair and holds it up high in the air.
-Oh no. - Jane exclaims.
-Arghhhhhh! - Liam shouts while shaking the chair above his head.
-Ok that's enough Liam, good job.
-He's a freak, I love it. - Blake interjects.
.
It's lunch time and Jane and I are in the cafeteria because it started raining and we can't sit outside in our usual spot.
-Do you think he's like... damaged?
-Who? Liam? No, he's just over enthusiastic. He's spent too much of his life quiet so he's got a lot energy built up.
-Yeah but no. Blake, the new guy.
-Oh. - my expression changes. - I think he's got some stuff going on for sure... but we already knew that.
-I was thinking of making him play the evil father that I had to write out of the play because we had nobody to play it but now I think that's a terrible idea.
-Yeah, probably. - We both go quiet for a bit and eat our sandwiches in silence. - I know! You could make him a character who doesn't get along with anyone and is really sad and just cries all the time.
-Hum I don't know maybe... I was thinking about the tadpoles, do you want to feel up some water bottles and bring them to our spot?
-Sure, but It's raining anyway, it's going to rain all week, how about we do that in 3 days when it's sunny?
-Oh ok, good idea.
.
Later that day I'm walking home with Liam. We're not really friends but we're not not friends. We see Blake walking alone ahead of us and I don't know what got into us but we both decide to start following him. He gets to an old house that used to be abandoned and now looks lived in, there's a bike in the front and the front door was painted over. He goes in and we are left standing a few feet behind watching the scene.
-Well that was boring, I don't know why we did that. - Liam says, disappointment in his tone.
-I guess we were expecting to see some matches, gasoline, an anarchist symbol sprayed on his fence. I don't know. - We both laugh at how silly we were being.
-Oh, look he dropped his phone. - We both look at each other and mentally decide I'll be the one to ring the bell. After almost 2 minutes we hear a voice from behind the door.
-Why are you here? Did you follow me home? That's pushing the friendliness over to the creepy side. - We are finding it strange that he doesn't open the door and talk to us face to face. Is he that scared of what we might do or is he angry with us?
-No, huh, we were walking by and we saw you drop your phone. That's it. - Liam answers. We hear some undistinguishable noise from behind the door.
-Just put it in the mailbox ok?
-Ok. - We answer. We look at each other confused but I signal for Liam to put the phone in the mailbox.
-Ok, bye. - We wave goodbye at the peephole and quickly get out of there.
-Not that normal after all hey? - Liam jokes elbowing me.
-No, that was definitely weird. I felt shivers down my spine. - I say still feeling very tense from the situation.
-Let's actually go home now. I'm starving.
