I walk home with Jane and Blake. They've been getting super close lately. I don't like sharing my only friend with anyone. Jane has more friends but she's always put me first. I feel jealous of how they get along so well. I'm quiet most of the time as they get lost in conversation with each other.
-Blake? - I ask, interrupting them. They both give me attention. - Why did your skin start to glow? That doesn't happen with people around here. I don't think it happens with people at all. - Blake looks thoughtful like he's rehearsing the correct words in his head. - And why did that explosion happen in the cafeteria? And did you burn down your last school?
Blake breathes deeply, exhaling more than inhaling. After a moment he collects himself and he calmly responds.
-I'd like you to keep this a secret. - He says looking at Jane and I. We nod. - I don't know why my skin glows. It only happens sometimes, usually when I'm taking a shower or when I am submerged in water for a long time. The same thing happens with my brothers and sisters. - We keep looking at him, waiting for him to keep going.
-I have a lot, and I mean a lot, of energy built up inside me. Enough to blow up the whole world and more. - He sees the fear in our eyes and how we stepped back. - But I wouldn't hurt anyone. Not intentionally. I affect the elements and they affect me. As I am still learning how to deal with my powers, I sometimes make a mess like the juice explosion in the cafeteria.
I look at Jane hoping she's scared like I am and that she'll decide to back away. She steps closer though and she doesn't look completely frightened.
-And the school? - I ask.
-Right... We move to places where the energy is very strong. In those places supernatural phenomena is way off the charts. Like Deep town. I didn't have anything to do with the fire. It happened at nighttime while I was asleep. I wish I could have done something. If anybody could it would be me...
-How could you have done something? - I ask.
-I can make it rain. I can change the weather. - After he says that I'm left speechless. This goes beyond Angela Jenkins theories. This is too weird to be made up. - Are you still my friends after what I just told you? I could use some friends... I don't usually have an easy time making friends.
-Yes, right Hannah? - Jane hugs Blake and I and looks at me with hope in her eyes. I look away and then look at Blake and Jane's faces.
-I guess... Yes?
We group hug and I get squeezed in between them. This feels like the beginning of something. I just can't imagine what could go beyond all this. I hope I'm ready.
