Dragonflies

One of my favorite things
to do as a child was to look
for dragonflies outside our fence.
I would go out with a strainer
from my mother's kitchen
and I would hunt for the biggest,
or the most beautiful,
or the most intriguing dragonfly.
After I catch one,
the first order of business is
what the older people taught me to do,
which was to tear off a tiny part
of their wing, that way they won't get away.
But then I would get bored,
greedy, or just curious, perhaps...
And I wouldn't stop at that tiny part,
I'd proceed to tear a larger part of their wing.
First from the left. And then from the right.
Then when there were no wings
left for me to rip off, I would go for their tail.
And bit by bit, I would rip that dragonfly to pieces.
I did that day after day after day.
One of my favorite things to do as an adult is to look for love.
...For love's sake, I hope I never actually find it.
