Rising Ego

Ruby's POV

I walked into the diner with Weiss.

(Y/N) had invited Weiss and me to meet his new friend, Eddie Brock.

I happily agreed. Eddie sounded like a cool guy. I'd also asked if Weiss could come, and (Y/N) allowed it.

I stood at the door.

"We should probably talk to him about his... you know," Weiss said.

"Yeah..." I said. "We should..."

(Y/N)'s ego had been growing over the past few days. I loved him with all my heart, of course, and I wanted him to be proud of himself, but this new ego of his was starting to get out of hand. I had been planning on talking to him about it again, but I never found the right time. Now seemed like the best time.

As we walked in, I turned to Weiss.

"Hey, how's Norman?" I asked.

"He's... quiet," Weiss said. "I think he's leaving me alone for once."

"That's good," I said.

"Ruby!" I heard (Y/N) call.

I saw him waving, and sitting with two people, who I assumed to be Eddie and his wife, Anne.

Weiss and I walked over to the table and sat with them.

"Ruby," (Y/N) said, "this is Eddie Brock."

Eddie smiled and shook my hand. "(Y/N)'s told me so much about you."

"Yeah," I said. "He's told me about you too."

"And who are you?" Eddie asked Weiss.

"This is my friend Weiss," (Y/N) answered. "She's been going through some tough times recently, so we thought we'd bring her along."

"Yeah," I said.

Weiss showed an uncomfortable smile.

"You okay?" Anne asked. "You look uncomfortable."

Weiss was quiet. "I... I don't know anymore..."

Timeskip

We'd been chatting for a few minutes now.

I had to admit, (Y/N) was right. I liked this Eddie. He was very charming, and nice. Not as much as (Y/N), but still.

"So," Eddie said, "(Y/N) tells me you two are really close. How well is your relationship going?"

"It's..." I started. "It's going good for the most part."

(Y/N)'s POV

That confused me.

"What do you mean 'for the most part'?" I asked.

Ruby looked at me. "Well... it's just... your... ego..."

'Oh, you've got to be kidding me!'

"This again?" I said. "Ruby, you know I'm trying to get over that!"

"I know," she said. "And I know you don't want to be like this, but it's still getting worse every day."

I groaned. "Do we have to talk about this here?!" I yelled.

Everyone in the diner turned to me.

"(Y/N)... I'm just trying to..." Ruby started.

I stormed out of the diner.
