hello beautiful people :)

how is everyone's day? or night?
i'm not super happy with this one but here ya go

"This is a joke," Phinks scoffed in defeat as Chrollo beat him, yet again, in another chess match. And when I said 'beat' I actually meant 'wiped the floor with him'.

"No need to be so glum, Phinks. You just need some practice," The boss mused. "Practice, my ass. What I need is some damn luck." As the short-tempered blonde stood up, he pointed his finger at me. "If anyone's a master at chess, it's Y/n. She beat the boss like five times!"

Before I knew it, all eyes were on me. "I wouldn't call myself a master or anything. And it was three times, not five... haha."

"Still. Three times is a lot. Not even Shizuku and Franklin were able to beat him," noted Shalnark. I scratched the side of my cheek in uncertainty. "Um, I guess. I still don't think I'm all that great—"

"Ah, stop being all modest and admit you're good! Maybe you should challenge him again so you can add four wins to the record,"Nobunaga jested. Everyone else joined him as well. "It's been a while since we last played, Y/n. I'd like to see how better you've gotten." I was a bit flattered that Chrollo wanted to play chess with me.

The last time we played, it was over a year ago. And  I hadn't developed feelings for him yet. Oh God, he was going to read me like a book! I couldn't stop the anxiety from prickling through my body. I was going to be far too distracted by his presence to even pay attention to the game. It was certain. I was going to lose. And he was probably going to realize my feelings for him just by reading my face expression.

I was so screwed.

As I sat across from the man in slight discomfort, my eyes mindlessly wandered down to that dinner roll six pack— nopenopenopenopenope. Y/n, you little hoe. The chess game hadn't even started and I was already becoming overwhelmed.

Chrollo set down the first piece, then I quickly used my turn. This was easy, well, it should've been. But my mind was so occupied with thoughts of him that I wasn't even thinking about the game. I played chess so many times throughout my life, that it was easy to let my body go into autopilot for a while.

I heard Chrollo hum in thought, making me look up. "If I'm correct, today is your birthday right?" I was genuinely surprised by his words, and so was the rest of the Troupe. I forgot my own birthday, but he remembered it for me. "I—y-yeah, it is. I guess I forgot," I laughed awkwardly. However, the others didn't take this news so lightly.

"It's your birthday?!!! What are you like fifteen??" bellowed Uvogin. "Uh, no. I turned twenty-three this year."  (sorry if it's not your actual age. i wanted to make it a bit more realistic)
Before I knew it, I was completely surrounded by the Troupe members. "Happy Birthday, Y/n! Wow, I wish I knew my birthday," Shizuku said with merry. I genuinely thanked the woman and soon, the others all congratulated me as well.

"This ain't gonna cut it," I heard Uvo grunt. "We find out this chick's birthday and we're not doing anything to celebrate it?!" He sounded a bit crude, but I was touched nonetheless.

"Uvo's right. We should go get some party supplies and have a fun party," suggested Pakunoda. "What? No no. That wouldn't be fair to the rest of you. Just because it's my birthday doesn't mean we have to do anyth—" I was then cut off by Machi. "Just shut up silly. We're celebrating it whether you wanna or not."

I softly grinned. No one here knew their own birthday except me, but they still wanted to celebrate it with me regardless. "I have an idea. Why don't we all celebrate? As a family. It can be everyone's birthday!" My friends immediately took my proposal to heart and next thing I knew, I was pulled into one giant embrace. "Group hug," they all shouted in unison.
