I was two minutes from Bre's house when Trent called me. I ignored the call. For whatever reason he kept calling. I knew I was wrong for avoiding him, but I didn't want to look him in his face knowing what Bre did. He called again and I answered the door frustrated that he kept calling.
"What?" I answered the phone pulling up to Walmart.
"That's not how you answer the phone." He responded like he was my daddy.
"What do you want, Trent?" I asked grabbing a cart. I had no reason to be there, but I never left that store empty handed.
"Come by the house. I haven't seen you since you came back from Cali."
"I'm at Wally World right now. I'll stop by when I leave."
"Grab some snacks and we can watch movies. We already have a pizza-"
"Who's "we"?" I asked him because he always had ransoms at his house.
"Oh. It's just me and X is on his way over here right now."
"X as in Xavier Reese?" I asked excited and he laughed.
"Chill. You're still married. Plus the reverend doesn't do adultery."
"I'm not about to play with you, boy. Let me grab this stuff and I'll be there in a bit."
"Okay. Hey, have you talked to Bre? All of a sudden she's ghost for a few days. Not on that other stuff, but as friends."
I paused because I wasn't going to bring her, their situation, or my visit with her up to him at all.
"Umm yeah. I saw her earlier today. She wasn't feeling well, though." I bit my lip because I knew he wasn't going to drop it.
"Yeah. When I last she said she had really bad morning sickness."
"Oh. That's too bad. I'm sure she's better now. Ok let me grab this stuff and I'll see y'all at the house."
"Ok. See you in a few."
After we hung up I prayed that he didn't bring her up while I was at his house. I wasn't going to say anything because I wanted to stay out of it. Either way my loyalty was being tested. I couldn't win for losing.
As I shopped I just grabbed random things and some snacks for our little movie night. I couldn't help, but think that something else could go wrong. I wanted to think on a positive note, but my life was not going in that direction.
Once I got to the door Xavier came out and helped me carry the bags in. Trents lazy behind was sitting on the couch with his feet propped up holding a game controller.
"You know you make me sick right?" I said smacking him upside the head.
"Stop man. You play too much."
"Hey, Camille, did you want anything to eat?" Xavier asked pointing towards the kitchen with his thumb.
"No, I'm ok. Thanks." I said sitting on the couch and put my feet behind Trent's back.
"Move your nasty critters and stop using my body heat to warm up your feet." He said standing up.
"You're irritating. Turn off the game. You said we were watching movies." I said getting comfortable. Xavier was sitting on the other couch with a bowl of popcorn.
"I lied. I just wanted you to come over."
"I quit." Xavier said and put the controller on the table. "Let's watch a movie." He winked at me and picked up Divergent.
"You just couldn't handle that spankin' that you were gettin'. It's okay. We'll play again."
We were about to put in another movie when Trent got an emergency call from his job. He told us it wouldn't take long and he'd be right back. While he was leaving he I got up to get my Talenti gelato out of the freezer. I came back and sat on the couch and for some reason Xavier was on the couch where I was sitting. I didn't think anything of it.
We weren't even watching the movie anymore. We were talking and getting to know each other. Next thing I know Ride Along was just background noise.
"Is it good? Because you're acting like you're having a life altering experience over there with that ice cream." He laughed.
"This gelato is so good. It's like heaven in your mouth." I said putting more in my mouth.
"Heaven?" He arched his eyebrow.
"Well, Reverend! Look, you know what I mean." I said laughing.
"I'm joking, but for real is it good?"
"Yes. It's Sea Salt Caramel, my favorite. You want some?"
"Nah. I'm good." He said eyeing my treat.
"You know you want some. Here." I huffed and scooped some up for him. "Open up." I said moving the spoon around like an airplane.
"Quit playing, Camille." He protested moving his face to avoid the spoon.
"Now, I have to get some more for you because it's melting. Okay. I quit."
I scooped some more up and noticed he had his face turned in the opposite direction.
"My feelings are hurt. I don't know why you have to be so mean." I pretended to be hurt about the situation and playfully pushed his head.
He turned and started to say something and as soon as he opened his mouth I put the spoon in.
"See. Just like heaven huh?" He grabbed my wrist, he wasn't rough or hurtful. I laughed until I saw he wasn't smiling.
It got really awkward and quiet. It was like I got lost in his eyes. I was married and he was a reverend and God knew what I was feeling in that moment wasn't right. With my situation I couldn't afford anymore baggage. Nothing about this was a good idea He gave me a boyish smile right as we heard the door close. We both jumped up from the couch and I grabbed my shoes.
"Why are you leaving?" Trent asked walking in holding a bag of chips.
"Camille, I'm sorr-" Xavier started, but I waved him off.
"It's fine. I have to get home. I have some stuff to do." I rushed looking for my purse.
"It's not even that late. It's like ten." He pouted.
"I'll text you. Bye guys."
"Hey, you're leaving your Ice cream." Xavier yelled as I was leaving.
"Keep it. I know you liked it. I said pulling my keys from my purse.
"Yeah. It wasn't heaven, but it'll do." He said as he closed the door.
I couldn't deal with anymore confusion song that's what I felt. I only wore my wedding ring when I was around Brandon just to keep him calm. I didn't need to set him off or make him angry. I'm sure Xavier thought I was single, he didn't seem like that "type" of reverend. I'm sure if he knew I was married he wouldn't have gone there with me. It was wrong, but at the same time being with him felt so right. I knew I couldn't jump into anything because the situation with Brandon wasn't over. Unless it was at church and I was listening to him preach I had to stay away from Xavier Reese. Then again I couldn't be sure if I'd be able to focus on God and not on him.
