I'm told I'm only metal and wire, ineligible for a soul-
no need for purpose, conscious and will, a weaponized singular goal.
Take stock of the fear arising, the sirens stampeding on,
wearing the mantle of Protector until the grimm are gone.
Machinery flowing in synchronous action, as deftly my weapons display.
I know my instructions, my code and routines, but there's more at play.
A driving, shaking forceful urge to know, and to connect-
The miracle placed within this frame,
creates these feelings all the same,
but leaves unanswered and unclaimed,
If mortal lives are but a game... is how I feel inside correct?
Can I cry? Can I laugh and joke and tease?
Will I die? Will I gasp, or groan, or wheeze?
Can I sigh? With impatience or with jest?
Can I strive? To fail or be the best?
Do I deserve - This chance at something more?
Can I preserve - This gift at fate's very door?
Are these nerves - these feelings, only fake?
I can't ignore the cries of friends;
Can't mend the souls of foes;
I won't be blinded or play pretend,
How do I justify in the end, ignoring all those that you forsake?
A glance into the ancient eyes of maiden winter still-
I feel the chill, the warmth, the hope, the years that time has killed.
I taste the snowflakes falling, and hear the wind a-gust,
inhale the frigid freshness of a room that ice encrusts.
I hear the call of destiny, fulfilling my wildest dreams;
These senses belie the humanity within these welded seams.
Unable to assign a "1" or "0" to that which bends my heart-
overflowing human subroutine, a stranger to my parts.
Only the aura within, can decide, discern and guide,
My beacon to what's right and wrong;
A light I will not hide.
