It was silent. Too silent. Everything was a bit too relaxing. And like fate had read her mine, Maya jumped as her door slammed open and yells vibrated the room.
"WHOO!!" Zay called out as he plopped down on Maya's bed beside her. "First year is done, baby!!" He threw an arm around her shoulder, ignoring the glare that she gave him as her finger was pressed against one of her ears.
"We've been telling him to calm down the entire walk over here." Lucas said as he sat down on Maya's desk chair. Riley and Farkle came in behind him and Riley shut the door as Farkle sat down on Riley's bed and made room for her to sit next to him.
"That last exam was harder compared to the others we had to take this week." Riley commented.
"That's because it was the last one. It's not that it was harder than the others, but our brain was focusing on the fact that-"
"Yeah we don't care." Zay cut Farkle off as he sighed happily. He ignored the glare that Farkle was now giving him. "We're finally done. I don't want to even hear the words homework or exam until school starts back." Zay told them. Farkle rolled his eyes.
"Just because we're done with exams doesn't mean we're done with school for the whole year. We still have meeting to go to about next year, teachers to talk to about classes-"
"Farkle what did I just say?" Zay cut him off again. Everyone shared a laugh as Riley put a hand on in Farkle's shoulder in sympathy, but even she couldn't hold back a little giggle.
Maya looked up and smiled. It had been a while since they were all back together. The only person that was missing was Smackle. But she would be finishing up her exams soon and getting the first plane back to New York. Then they would all have the summer together.
It's what Maya needed. A summer with just her and her friends had sounded like heaven after a year like this one. She was looking forward to next year. Hopefully there wouldn't be as much drama with thing being so different when they get back. Josh would be gone and all her troubles would be on that plane with him. Or so she had been trying to convince herself for the last four months.
It was also nice to be able to have Lucas and Riley in the same room together without an argument breaking out. They still hadn't really been able to talk to each other since what all had happened between them. But Josh and Maya splitting up to talk to them had done a lot of good. Things weren't okay, but it was slowly getting there. And a bit of normal is what Maya could really use in her life right now.
"So when we having the party?" Zay asked them. Everyone raised an eyebrow. "What?" Zay asked them. "We're future Sophomore's who just survived their freshman year! We should have a party!" He called out.
"Aren't Seniors usually the ones that have the parties around here?" Lucas asked. "At least, that's what I've always been told." Zay rolled his eyes.
"Well maybe it's time that we break that tradition. I'm proud of us! Let's have a party!" Zay told them. Maya smiled.
"Zay's right. We should have a party to celebrate." Maya told them. Zay looked over and smiled.
"There's the old Maya we all know and love! Where you been lately? You left me all by myself with them." Zay motioned his head over to the rest of the group. Maya rolled her eyes.
"I guess a party could be kind of fun." Riley shrugged her shoulders. She looked over at Farkle, who still looked hesitant on the matter.
"I could go my entire college education without going to a party, you know. Parties get you in trouble and cause you to do certain things that ought to be illegal." Farkle complained. Everyone stared at him for a moment.
"He'll go." Maya said. Farkle snapped his head to her as Zay cheered.
"Maya!" Farkle complained. Maya smiled at him.
"You'll go." She stated and he sighed.
"I'll go." He mumbled.
"Lucas?" Zay asked as everyone turned their heads towards him. He had been really quiet the entire time as everyone else had been talking to one another.
"I don't know. I'm not really the party type anymore." He said. Riley was the only one that wasn't looking at him, as she was looking everywhere else and trying to avoid his stare.
"Oh come on, Huckleberry. Live a little, that's what college is all about. Experience." She stated. Lucas rolled his eyes.
"I'm my 'experience'," he stated. "I've learned that there are certain things that could go wrong at a college party. You of all people should know about things like that, Maya."
Maya was immediately brought back to the first time she ever went to a college party. It was here at NYU and she was still in middle school. She remembered the exact reason that she had gone, too. She glared at Lucas for even bringing the subject up.
"Well this is why we take college parties and make new memories." Zay called out as he sensed the tension that had suddenly welcomed itself into the room. "This is our chance to be able to live out our lives before we enter into the horrid place of adulthood." Zay gave a shiver as he said the word 'adulthood' like it had taken everything in his being not to say it.
"Not necessarily, remember what Josh told us when he started high school?" Farkle asked them. "He said that high school was our last stop until he grew up."
"Yes, grow up. There is a little grey area between the stages of 'grow up' and 'adulthood', and that area is college, my friend." Zay told him.
"Okay we get it. Zay is passionate about this." Maya joked as she rested her hand on Zay's knee. "I for one could use a little partying in my life. I'm in." Maya told them. Zay smiled at her.
"Me, too." Riley said.
"I guess I don't really have a choice." Farkle said as he glared at Maya, who smiled and blew him a kiss in return as a joke.
"I don't like it." Lucas said. Everyone just stared at him. He sighed and nodded his head. "Alright. I guess I'm in, too."
"Yes! I'm going to go tell everyone!" Zay shot up from the bed and ran out of the door going to tell the rest of the freshman. Everyone shared a look.
"I better go keep him out of trouble." Lucas commented as he got up from the chair and left the room behind Zay.
"I can't believe I let you talk me into this." Farkle said as he shook his head and walked out the door, closing it behind him. Maya and Riley shared a look and then busted out laughing.
What would they do without their friends.
