We reach the lake, and place each girls' things by a rock. Ariana lights a candle for each person. We each say a few words, and then have a moment of silence. I look into the woods. I see a little yellow gleam on the ground. I take some binoculars from my backpack, and look at the object. It's the flashlight that the girls had when they disappeared.
I look over at Ariana. Her black liquid eye liner is running down her cheeks in thick, black lines. She makes no sound, she just cries, just the way I did earlier, after the zombies left. I go to comfort her. She just stands there, like a statue. I put my hand on her shoulder, and she closes her eyes. This time, she makes sound. I hug her, and she hugs me back tighter than I knew a human could. The others come join us in our group hug of mourning.
"Why did this have to happen?" Ariana whisper-cries to me. Suddenly, tears burst out of my eyes.
"I don't know." I say, in the same tone.
