Wedding plans were underway! It was 1980, and Jesse and I had to do now was to wait until I was 18, so we could marry. My godparents were thrilled about our upcoming wedding, as was Jesse's side of the family.
My brother Vasilios was happy too, and was hoping to make the same kind of life for himself and his beautiful girl, Anastacia.
One day, I took a break from trying on dresses so Vasilios and I went to see 'The Shining' with Jack Nicholson and Shelley Duvall. Now, FAR BE IT from me to watch scary films, such films give me nightmares, but this one I liked because it had a 'Nancy Drew' feel to it, not just my show, but I read the Nancy Drew books all my life, and sometimes they featured what seemed to be the supernatural.
But seriously, I was creeped out by that movie, and though it was good, I wasn't sure if I wanted to see it again. Vasilios was kind enough to hold my hand through it. But the following week, the girls and I saw Olivia Newton John's latest movie 'Xanadu'. It was a lovely film, and she was so adorable as always! I told her that when I spoke to her on the phone that evening. She told me that she was dating someone she met on the set of the film! Very romantic!
However, there was news that Jesse and I didn't anticipate or welcome. Several family members would be unable to attend our wedding, including my Aunt Orea, as well as Jesse's grandparents because his grandmother was sick, and my Aunt Orea had to go to Greece because of some 'friend emergency'. Needless to say we were so disappointed! Of all people to attend out wedding, I wanted my godparents and Aunt Orea to attend most. And it only made sense for Jesse's grandparents to be there.
"I think it's best we just elope." Said Jesse. I agreed with him. If not everyone would attend our wedding, then that's what we were going to do.
We organized to have our wedding in Las Vegas. We'd fly there, sleep for a night in separate hotels, get married the next day, have dinner in Caesar's Palace before going to our wedding suite to consummate our marriage.
I was a little nervous about the wedding night. I was a virgin, hence I had never done it before. We were always told to wait until marriage, and I couldn't agree with that more! And while I was nervous, I was excited. We were very attracted to each other. I had grown my hair longer, and he had a very sexy mullet. Personally, I think that was his best do.
We bought our apartment before our wedding, and moved our things there so we wouldn't have to do that after our wedding (but again, we didn't live together until AFTER we were married).
On April 18th, we flew to Las Vegas. But this isn't your typical elopement story. We were still traditional people and we decided to get married at the St John The Baptist Greek Orthodox Church. Lucky for us there was a Greek Orthodox church in Las Vegas!
I stayed the night at the Tropicana Hotel while Jesse stayed at the Flamingo, the night before our wedding. We made sure not to see each other at all the next day until the wedding commenced.
The morning of our wedding, I put on my dress, had breakfast and ordered a limo to take me to Caesar's Palace where our wedding was taking place. Jesse was still at the Flamingo, getting ready himself, so I checked us in to our honeymoon suite since I was already at Caesar's palace. I went to get my hair and makeup done for our wedding, having made a booking for the Caesar's Palace beauty parlor a week in advance.
Afterwards, the reception called me a limousine to take me to the church. They told the driver to wait for us while we got married, so she could take us back to the hotel! What a sweet gesture!
"It's your wedding day!" They said. "It's our pleasure!"
In gratitude, I signed an autograph for them. I skipped merrily to the car, got out when I got to the church. This was it...
