In 1978, just after I'd turned 15, something happened that would change my life forever. I met my husband. My Jesse was on the show General Hospital, and we'd recognized each other in the studio. I was attending an audition with Teresa, as she really wanted to get into a well-known show, in hope of having her big break. I was all too happy to go with her for moral support.
I must confess, I did have a crush on him when I was watching him on General Hospital, and I was quite jealous of Janine Turner and Danielle von Zerneck, who played his girlfriends, but what I would find out later is that the very Jesse Phillip Katsopolis had a crush on me too!
It was love at first sight, truly. We had a lot in common too, we were both Greek, heartthrobs on TV, we were both musicians, we both played guitar, and, if I may be so blunt, we both had a high libido (but that wasn't something we found out until our marriage). Also, Jesse and I always spoke to each other in Greek, and if we wrote something to each other, we would always write it in Greek. We wanted to keep out Greek heritage, and NEVER let it go!
We would also work together on our music a couple of times, and one thing we promised to each other was to never sing with anyone of the opposite sex apart from each other. He'd sometimes sing with other guys, I'd sing with other girls, but the only guy I sang with was him, and the only girl he sang with was me!
It wasn't long, however, before Jesse and I got engaged. By this time we'd already met each other's families, and they loved us! My godparents adored Jesse, and his typical Greek mom loved me too. I also grew close to his older sister Pam, and their sweet little girl, Donna Jo (everyone called her DJ).
I knew of Danny and Pam Tanner, Danny was newscaster for NBC Nightly News, and Pam was a former beauty queen who became the face of the Home Shopping Network.
I talked about how we got engaged. After we went to watch the movie 'Grease', we took a little walk around the Bay Area, and we stopped for a while to admire the view of the Golden Gate Bridge at night. That's when all of a sudden, Jesse reached for something in his pocket, got down on one knee an asked me to marry him! Of course I said yes, without hesitation! And this - my engagement ring was an exact REPLICA of the ring shown in ABBA's music video for 'Money Money Money'! I couldn't believe it! He actually had it CUSTOM MADE knowing how much I love ABBA!
Everyone was so thrilled, and my godparents even hosted an engagement party for us! I could tell that Jesse's mother and my godparents really wanted us to marry! If we still had arranged marriages in western society, Jesse & I would no doubt have been promised to each other, and it's great because we were not only very much in love, but we also saw our own compatibility. Hence why we were together! This was love, I just knew it. Every time Jesse and I had a date, we'd always say "I love you" at the end of each date.
Our engagement party was at this beautiful country club in this beautiful San Fran suburb, where Jesse and I would later live. It had a gorgeous view and everything! Not to mention a large dancefloor for all the Greek dances we'd dance!
I danced our traditional Greek dances ever since I could walk, so I knew all the moves! And me being an ABBA fan, just TRY to imagine how elated I was when I discovered Frida sang a cover version of one of our known Greek songs (namely Siko Xorepse Sirtaki)! My godmother always told me I had the legs for dancing! And I loved Greek dancing, I just love my Greek heritage so much! But I digress...
Danny, Pam, along with DJ and Jesse's mom attended the engagement party. We knew that when we got married we wanted all our loved ones to be there. Especially my Aunt Orea, who was always like a second mom to me. She'd sometimes help me to wash my long hair in winter, although that was more of a bonding experience than a practicality.
Terese was going to be my maid of honor, of course! She still had not yet made her own big break on the screen, but it was gonna happen, I just knew it! She was very beautiful and talented, it was just a matter of time!
After all that dancing, I was so exhausted I almost fell asleep in the back of the car as Theo Galinos drove me, Thea Dianthe and Vasilios home.
I fell asleep as soon as my head hit the pillow, and I dreamed of dancing our traditional Greek dances on clouds in front of a golden Parthenon!
