Chapter 19 - Therese's Big Break

In 1985, my best friends Therese FINALLY got the big break she'd been waiting for! She was picked by this Norwegian band to shoot a music video with them in the UK. I was so happy for her! Of course, I'd miss her, but I was SO happy she was FINALLY being discovered!

She was so thrilled for this new opportunity, and I even saw her off at the airport. She called as soon as she was settled in London. I couldn't wait to see the video. Little did I know it would be so groundbreaking!

Therese was the girl in the famous music video for 'Take On Me' by a-ha. Her popularity grew overnight. And if that weren't enough, she was even dating the lead singer, Morten Harket! I was so happy for her! They were a cute couple and looked so happy!

It wasn't long before they moved in together, and divided their time between San Fran and London. He ever took her to Norway to meet his parents.

'Take On Me' became such a big hit that a-ha were going all over the world top perform it on TV and Therese accompanied them.

I got postcards from London, Paris, Amsterdam, even Tokyo! She sure was becoming well-traveled.

Eventually, they came here to America, where a-ha were performing on 'Soul Train' and 'Solid Gold' - and because Therese used to dance for Solid Gold, they invited her to dance for Morten when he performed!

Jesse and I met them in LA where the shows were taking place, and great timing too because Jesse and the Rippers were performing on Solid Gold too, and I was recording my first solo album. Luckily we were able to do all that stuff in San Francisco, recording and what not. Trips to LA weren't that frequent for us. We didn't like LA anyway, and we didn't want to go to Hollywood.

Sure enough, Jesse and I saw the video once it was released, and my gosh it was too cool! Very innovative for its time! I knew Therese would make it. And I didn't blame Morten for falling for her, she was very beautiful, and kind. The two of us were like sisters, cheering each other on. Morten said that he knew of her being my bassist in the Go Go Girls, and he felt she'd have the perfect look for the video. Sexy, yet innocent. That was the public perception of us anyway. My husband and I were always called 'wholesomely smouldering'. I liked that. The ladies of ABBA were 'wholesomely smouldering' too.

The couple seemed to have this beautiful whirlwind romance, just like Jesse and I (even today after all these beautiful years!) and I was so proud of Therese. They even said that MARRIAGE was on the cards! I must say, that was fast, but I was still happy for her. He was a handsome fella too! No more handsome than my Jesse of course, but when Jesse and I watched them on TV with the Tanners (which happened to be the same episode Jesse and the Rippers were performing in) DJ rapidly developed a crush on Morten. Although she & Therese were very fond of each other, she was understandably jealous that Therese got to date him and she didn't.

Therese understood, since DJ was only 8, so she arranged one day for DJ to meet Morten! They were visiting us in San Francisco and they were staying with Therese's parents, so one day, the couple went to a restaurant, and DJ put on her best clothes. We all went to meet them.

"You must be DJ." Said Morten, shaking DJ's hand. "I'm pleased to meet one of my youngest fans."

"Pleased to meet you too." Smiled DJ as she blushed. It was so adorable, DJ and her crush on Morten.

We all sat down to dinner at the Hard Rock Cafe. Jesse, naturally, suggested the restaurant as it reminded him of Elvis, and Morten was a newly successful musician. I thought it was a great idea and so we went in and got ourselves a VIP booth.

DJ got to sit next to the man of her dreams, and she was smiling and blushing the whole time, especially when Morten asked her a question.

When the night was over, Morten signed a napkin for DJ, and gave her a kiss on the cheek. She looked like she was ready to faint, and a smile formed on her face again as we went to our vehicles and drove home.

The next morning I heard that DJ was tired because she hadn't been able to sleep the whole night. She put her napkin with Morten's autograph in a frame so she could "keep it forever" as she put it. Oh my sweet DJ. What a precious angel.

Soon, Therese returned to England with Morten, and DJ was heartbroken. But it wasn't long before they returned and got to perform on 'Wake Up San Francisco' and since it was Summer and DJ wasn't in school, she was able to go to the studio and watch them sing live. Needless to say she was elated.
