It wasn't long before Joey and Therese found out that they were in fact having twins. I treated her to a celebratory lunch.
"Joey practically fainted when he found out that we were having twins." She said. "I was quite in shock myself. But Joey had to lay on the bed at the doctor's office as he was so dizzy!"
"I can't believe it myself." I told her.
I allowed Therese to babysit Frida, so she could have some practice, even though it wouldn't exactly prepare her for having twins. As her pregnancy progressed, she was doing relatively well, but one day, let's just say it wasn't the best of days for her. She felt chilly, and needed her wool socks, so Joey went into their crawlspace and retrieved them for her.
Therese was feeling self conscious about herself, even though I told her she still looked very beautiful, and I meant that! We were visiting them at the time, and they'd just got done with their child-birthing classes. As we were talking, Joey returned from the supermarket.
"What'd you get me?" Asked Therese.
"Exactly what you wanted. Salt and vinegar potato chips." Said Joey.
"Oh honey, is that what I asked for? Because I really have a craving for garlic and cheddar chips." Said Therese.
"Mmm, well, I uh had a feeling you might change your mind especially after the second time you paged me at the market, so I got every chip known to man." Said Joey as he poured out the grocery bags full of chips. "It's the pregnancy variety pack."
Jesse and I were surprised to see that much chips!
"Oh honey, you're so thoughtful!" Said Therese. "You didn't happen to get any with ridges, did you?"
"Ridges? What's the big deal about ridges? It's, it's like a potato chip that needs to be ironed." Said Joey.
"Honey, those ridges help you scoop up a lot more bean dip." Said Therese.
"Oh, I forgot the bean dip!" Said Joey as he rushed to the door, with Therese going after him.
"Don't worry about it." Said Therese. "You can go get it after they go home."
"Oh, goodie." Said Joey, sarcastically.
"Would you like some tea, Therese?" I offered.
"That would be lovely, thank you, Olia." She replied.
She joined me in the kitchen while Jesse and Joey talked and played with little Frida.
"Was Ophelia ever like this?" Joey asked him.
"Not at all." Said Jesse. "I mean she had cravings every now and again, but she always insisted on getting food herself."
"I don't know how much more of this I can handle." Said Joey.
"Hey, you gotta take a stand. You're her husband, not her slave." Said Jesse. Joey agreed he was right. Before long, Therese and I joined our husbands in the living room.
"Honey, you know what I just got a craving for, a nice slice of seedless watermelon. Doesn't that sound good?" Said Therese.
"Watermelon's out of season right now. You'd probably have to go to Mexico to get it." Said Joey.
"Well, you've got a car!" Said Therese.
"Heh, heh, do you believe this Jess?" Said Joey. "She'd send me to Mexico to get her seedless watermelon. Do you believe this?"
"Wait a minute, wait a minute. We shouldn't have to send them. They should be happy to go!" Therese was insisting.
"Look Therese, going to the market and stuff like that's fine, I'd go for that, but leaving the country to get seedless watermelon 'cause you have some kind of wacky craving, that's where I draw the line." Said Joey. "Next thing, you know, you're gonna want Swiss chocolate."
"Oooh, that does sound good." Said Therese, her craving changing again.
"I'm flying to Switzerland!" Said Joey!
"You don't have to, you can get Swiss chocolate here, anyway." I told them.
"She's right Joey." Said Therese. "Besides, you're missing the point. It's not about where you go. It's about you guys being there for us. I mean, okay, so maybe we're a little over emotional and maybe we do get a little demanding, but that's because our hormones are running wild. I mean we're happy, we're sad, we're hot, we're cold, we're huge, and all we want are rigged potato chips and a nice slice of juicy watermelon with a side of Swiss chocolate. Now is that too much to ask, I don't think so!"
All of a sudden Therese started crying, making Jesse and myself feel awkward. I love Therese, but I didn't like how demanding she was.
"No, no, sweetheart, I'm sorry. It's not too much to ask." Said Joey, taking her into his arms. "I know the babies depend on you for everything, so you should be able to depend on me. I'm sorry."
"Oh Joe, what's wrong with me? I mean, you're so patient and understanding, and I don't deserve you!" Said Therese, tearfully. "I'm going to be normal again someday, right?"
"I sure hope so, Therese." He said.
"Maybe we should get doing." Said Jesse, awkwardly. "It's almost Frida's nap time anyway."
On the quiet drive home, I was thinking about Therese's behavior. I didn't go through what she did, but I tried my best to understand her. It must've been hard carrying twins, and I wouldn't have blamed her if she were nervous about giving birth, especially to twins.
