Reina was doing her homework. It was really tiresome to complete her studies while doing her part time job at the cafe. The owner was kind enough to let her study while she was at work. Even though she tried her best to balance both, she would feel extremely sorry about being more of a bother than a helping hand.
"Gosh. Look at you! I wish my daughter had been as studious as you. I feel bad for you, my child. You are working at such a tender age." the owner would say.
Reina sighed. It's not that she liked studying. It was for making herself capable enough to stand on her two feet in this world. Independence was what she always craved for.
"Does this cafe have latte?"a voice croaked with a tone of annoyance.
"Coming!" Reina answered as she put away the notebook and proceeded towards the machine. If only she had been born in a a little acceptable and proper family, she would probably have been another kid who enjoyed her life. She would have had the chance to pursue her career as a writer. That was not possible if she continued to be a part timer. Her dreams were not important than a stable roof and food to eat.
Reina marched her way towards the customer. Suddenly she felt herself stepping on a slippery substance lying on the floor. Before she could interpret the situation, she tripped and the latte ended up drenching the customer. It took the lady merely five seconds to start rubbing the hot liquid that had landed on her cream coloured shirt and start cursing her.
"You brat! Do you even know how much this dress costs? It's Gucci for heaven's sake! How are you even going to compensate? You will never earn that much in your whole life!"
The owner came running while Reina bowed her head while apologising.
" Madam please forgive her. I will compensate you for sure. Please don't scold her. Poor lad . She is supporting herself and has no one to take proper care of her."
" Gosh... Don't even bother. It's my fault for coming here.I am letting it go. I have enough money to buy another. All I have is to ask my daddy. " said the lady annoyed.
" Reina, you can leave for today dear. It's your exam tomorrow. You should go and prepare for it. "
"Thanks a lot aunt. I really apologise for this mess" sighed Reina as she grabbed her bag and books. The owner whispered some soothing words as she put on a faint smile to show she was okay. Few minutes later, she found herself walking towards the park. She sat down on a bench.
Life had always been unfair. Had she been cursed? She shook off all the unnecessary thoughts and started solving sums. She had to score well. It would have been nice if she got the scholarship she had been eyeing somehow this time.
"Oh my! Look at the time! It's 5: 49 p.m. already. I have to go back home or I should rather say ' hell'..."she cried as her eyes fell on the park's clock.
Reina started for home. The streetlights flickered. Birds were going back to their home probably to their little ones who had been waiting for them in their cozy nests . It's surprising how those little nests are filled with love and tenderness. People were hurrying back home too. Some were still outside. Going towards the supermarket or little roadside shops where they would buy their food. The smell of cheese and frying sausages filled the air. People were rushing to eat something good after the tiring day. Girls of her age were crowding to buy their cosmetics and stuff. Their giggles made her wonder how different her life would have been if she had been destined to live a life like them. People don't appreciate what they have in life. Loving parents and enough food is a boon to them. They don't understand how hard it is to earn a little money while they throw out food .
She reached her home within a few minutes. The house had endured a lot. It had seen years of rain ,thunder, storms and bright days. The glory of her walls had faded over the years. Though it was small it atleast provided a roof under which she had spent her childhood. Probably she has to leave it and go on her own path within a few years.
She entered and closed the door. The house smelt of alcohol. Her father, in ragged clothes came towards her. He was drunk and was not walking properly.
He shouted "Did you bring money brat? Give me three more bottles."
"I didn't bring money. It's not my payday and stop consuming alcohol. You stink !" cried Reina .
"What did you just say? I am the elder and head of this family! How dare you raise your voice at me!" shouted her father and grabbed her hair while he slapped her. " You are becoming more like your mother. Get yourself together! I am providing you a roof!"
"You should act like the head if you are one! You do nothing but drink!" said Reina while tears dropped from her eyes.
"You ungrateful brat!"
Reina freed herself from his hands and ran to her room. She locked her door and started crying. If only she could find another place to live....she was tired of everything....She had no will to live on.
