I walked home from work with the rain pouring down on me, masking my tears that fell from my eyes. I thought I'd be able to end the week on a good note, but nothing ever worked in my favor.
I had to stay late tonight to re-edit the photos I had taken previously throughout the week, as Jennifer didn't like the way I had originally done it, saying she "couldn't send trash like that out for the public," she "wouldn't let my work damage the company's reputation."
On top of that, I had ran into her stupid assistant, Milo, who spilled coffee all over me, burning my chest. Which Jennifer also blamed me for of course.
I held back a sob. I was unsure why I even worked there anymore with the way I was treated, maybe I deserved being treated so poorly after everything I've done. I waited for the light to turn green, right before I started walking, a ding from my phone distracted me.
Hawks messaged me, it read, Hey dove r u free? if so can you do me a huge favor. I promise I'll repay you.
I quickly responded, standing off to the side to avoid other civilians walking by. Yeah I'm free what do you need?
My ringtone rang for a split second, his contact name flashing across my screen. "Hey, what's up?" I greeted, standing out of the way of the rain so I could hear him.
He was quiet as he spoke, "Hey, I'm kinda busy right now, but by any chance can you head to my house in Kyushu? There's a key hidden in the bush on the left side of the door. In my bedroom closet, there's a safe on the floor with a blue file inside. I'll text you the code when you get there."
"Um yeah, okay," I responded confused. "Is everything fine? Kyushu is kinda far away from where I live, are you sure you want me to do it?"
"You're the only person I trust with this baby-bird." His voice sunk deeper now. "I don't have much time left to talk to you okay? Please dove."
My stomach dropped. Was he in trouble? "Yeah, of course. What do you want me to do with it?"
"Once you get the file, go to my agency. Don't worry, I'll send you the directions from my house. Go to the front desk and let the lady know that I sent you. My intern Tsukuyomi can let you into my office, okay? I have to go dove, I'll send you the address to my house."
He hung up before I had a chance to reply. The location of his house and safe combination coming in right after. It's a good thing I was only a block from the train station. I turned my music on and started on my mission.
I shivered from the rain while I sat in the corner. I bit the skin around my fingers, switching to a different one each time i drew blood. I bounced my leg rapidly, feeling anxious as questions stormed through my mind. Was he in trouble? Why did he trust me with this? Couldn't he have his intern tsuko-something do this? I turned the music up on my phone, trying not to let the anxiety consume me.
Please tell me you're okay Keigo.
I followed the directions to his house. It probably would've been easier for me to take a bus there, as I was unfamiliar with the area, but I was too stubborn to give up the commitment I made with walking wherever I could.
I neared his house. It was a decent size, probably three times the size of my apartment. "Shit. Which bush did he say the key was in?" I asked myself, already forgetting. I chose the left first, pleased that my first choice what the correct one. The key was hidden well, causing me to get on my hands and knees to dig for it.
I pushed the door open, my eyes widening at how clean it was. While I was here I let my curiosity get the best of me, allowing myself to snoop around. On the first floor was a bathroom, living room, kitchen, he even had an actual dining room, though everything looked almost untouched. His place seemed bare of any homey touches, no pictures, no knickknacks of sorts around.
