Chapter 4

I finally made it to Jae's apartment after the whole coffee-stranger incident. The whole way to Jae's, I thought about the interaction we had. That Soobin guy was really nervous and shy while talking to me. If I didn't know any better I'd think- Nooo. Then again he did look my age. I wonder what he's studying?

No, Jihyun, stop. Today is about you and your boyfriend, you don't have time to think about a random dude you bumped into.

I enter the apartment complex and head right into the elevator. With a ding, I exit onto the 3rd floor and walk to Jae's door.

I balance the muffin bag on the cup carrier so I can find my spare key in my purse. When I find it I unlock the door and head inside. I call his name, with no reply. He should be home because we are supposed to meet at 3, it's already 2:30.

When I reach the living room I'm met with the TV on and one of Jae's shirts on the couch. That's not out of the ordinary, he lives alone and can wear what he wants.

I set the drinks and muffins down on the coffee table and turn off the TV, only to realize how loud it was. When I turn it off, I hear the voices and laughter the TV was covering. It sounded like it was coming from Jae's room.

I walk over to his room and stand in front of his closed door. The voices are louder and I think I hear a female voice inside too.

I take a deep breath in and pray this is a misunderstanding, hopefully the female voice is Jae's sister or something. I open the door all the way, which is one of the biggest mistakes I've ever made.

As soon as the door opens and slams against the wall I'm met with Jae on top of a random girl in his bed, fortunately, both still partly clothed.

When they realize I'm there, she covers herself with the blankets and Jae's eyes widen to the size of dinner plates.

"Wha- Jihyun!? You're here early!" He says.

I'm speechless. I can't form any words to say to him. I just turn and run straight out of the apartment. Behind me I can hear Jae calling my name, begging for me to come back. But I don't, I just keep running to the elevator.

Once I'm in the elevator I hastily press the lobby button. Before the doors close, I see Jae trying to put his shirt back on and follow me. Luckily he didn't reach the doors on time.

When the elevator opens to the lobby, I start running again. I run all the way past the coffee shop into the park. It wasn't till then did I break out of the shock and start crying.

I sit on a nearby bench with my head in my hands and elbows on my knees, and just sob. How could he do this?

I always thought we had the best relationship. We told each other everything, or at least I did. How long has this been going on? Am I not good enough? I have so many questions I need answers to.

Is what heartbreak feels like? It's like if the person who did you wrong reached in and grabbed your heart, and stomped it to a million pieces right in front of you. Now I'm left with the pieces and no glue or anything to put it back together.

I stay on the bench for another 15 minutes trying to figure out if I did something wrong, or if there were any signs I could have picked up on. I eventually stood up and walked back to the dorms. Hopefully Soonyoung is still there, I really need her right now.

When I get back to our dorm, Soon is on the couch watching TV while on her phone. She looks up to me and immediately has a look of worry on her face.

"Jihyun? Oh my god, what happened!? Are you ok!? Who did this!? I need names!" She yelled while running up to me.

I didn't answer any of her questions, I just hugged her as tight as I could and started to sob again.

She walked me to the couch and I leaned on her shoulder and cried more. Soon just sat with me and rubbed circles on my back until I was able to compose myself.

Once I'm done crying, I sat back and thanked her for comforting me.

"Ok, so mind telling me what's going on?"

"I- Jae- He-. I caught Jae with someone else." I spill out.

Soon's eyes widen for a moment, but then darken quickly.

"Youngjae is cheating on you?" She said with a dark undertone.

I nod my head. Soon cracks her knuckles and stands up.

"W-what are you doing?"

"I'm gonna have a chat with Youngjae about mistreating my best friend." She said all too calmly.

"Soon, don't. I don't want to start any more drama than there already is." I said.

Soon looked back at me, her eyes had softened a little. She was having an internal battle whether to confront Jae or not, but I won't let her.

I look at her with pleading eyes, begging her not to find Jae. If she did things could turn from bad to even worse for us.

She takes a really deep breath and lets it out. She walks back to me on the couch and sits next to me.

"Ok, I won't just because you don't want me to. But if things get worse for you, or if he tries to come back, I won't hesitate." She warns me.

I let out a small laugh at her willingness to fight someone for me, even though it's nothing new.

"So.... What are you gonna do now?" She asks.

I don't want to go anywhere, do anything, or talk to anyone. I just want to stay here and do nothing.

When I don't respond Soon stands up. She must have read my questioning face because she explains what she's doing.

"I'm gonna go to the corner store to get some food for this week, and some pumpkin spice mug cakes for you. Is there anything else you want?"

A/N

So the truth about Jae is revealed. When I was writing this, I didn't mean to make the times line up as they did. Jihyun ended up arriving only 30 minutes before she was supposed to sooooooo........... I decided to keep it anyway because it's more drama heheheee.

I'm sorry if the metaphor I used isn't how heartbreak actually feels, I've been fortunate enough to never have to experience it (but I've also never has a boyfriend so 🥲). Let me know if there is a way I can make it seem more real.

Anyway, stay safe guys! Make sure to get your favorite hot drink this week. I personally like hot chocolate with a lot of whipped  cream, but you guys should get a nice hot drink to feel warm and cozy.
