"Techno, Wilbur and I have set up an event like no other."
"Have you now, Tommy?" George asked, his voice sarcastic.
"We have. Come on, let's go downstairs." I looked at George, who looked at me and shrugged.
"I could use some fun." He said indifferently. I followed them down the grand staircase. The other residents were waiting at the bottom of the staircase. Techno stood, his stance almost regal, in front of them all.
"Alright, now that we're all here, let's begin. We're playing capture the flag. The rules were sent in the group chat," pings resounded among the phones. "and we're choosing teams on a captain based system. I will be one captain, and Dream will be the other." His eyes met mine and he smirked.
"So, pig boy, who's choosing first." I narrowed my eyes. He scoffed.
"You can go first." He said. "First is the worst." He snickered.
"Alright you five year old, I choose Tommy." I said coolly. Tommy's eyes lit up and he practically bounced up to my side.
"Wilbur." The wild haired man smiled, standing at his side.
"Who should we choose next Tommy?" I asked him. He grinned.
"Tubbo's a fast runner." I shrugged.
"Tubbo." Tubbo smiled wide and joined Tommy.
"Hmm," Techno looked at me, an evil look on his face. "George." The two boys looked at each other.
"Which one?"
"Georgenotfound." Techno replied. George looked sadly at me, although it was only for a moment until he and Wilbur began to converse. I stared at the people who remained.
"Bad." Bad joined our slowly growing group.
"Hello, Badboyhalo." Tommy said, reducing Wilbur to a cackling mess as usual.
"I choose Skeppy."
"Oh come on man why you gotta do us like that?" Skeppy complained, reluctantly stepping into the sort of formation the other team was in.
"Stupid little muffinhead." Bad muttered in the direction of Techno. I chuckled.
"Finn." I said, inviting the young man to join us.
"Vurb."
"You really are determined to separate the friends aren't you?" I said pointedly.
"Makes for better competition." He shrugged.
"Whatever," I rolled my eyes. "Fundy." Then I realized Sapnap still remained unchosen, and I panicked.
"Sapnap." Techno said, as if he could read my mind. I huffed.
"Harvey." I said, annoyed.
"The other George."
"Oh that's what I've been reduced to? Nice." He said in mock bitterness, joining Techno's herd.
"Niki." I looked straight at Wilbur.
"Oh and you blamed Techno for separating people." I laughed.
"I'm sorry Will." Niki murmured quietly.
"Don't use the sad voice please." Wilbur pleaded, his heart probably melting.
"Eret." Techno finished, and the teams were finalized.
"Here are the flags. Ours will be somewhere in my room and yours will be in the pet room. Flag guards must be at least 6 feet away-"
"Because Corona." Finn said.
"No, but anyways, the flag guard can't stand in the doorway of the room because that makes it impossible for others to get in."
"Seems fair." I said, taking our red handkerchief and beckoning for my team to follow me up stairs, where our domain would be. I motioned to the blue line right in the middle of the 2nd floor as we passed it. That was where it separated our side from theirs, one staircase leading to their side and one staircase leading to ours. We continued upstairs into the pet room, where everyone stopped to say hello to the animals while I looked around for a place to put the flag.
"Hello Patches." I said to my cat, who sat stoically on the highest tower in the room. Eden, Techno's cat, sat on the second tallest, looking frustratedly at Patches, who presumabely gained the top tower by winning over the other cats. I turned back to Patches. "As you should. Will you guard this flag for us please?" I asked, laying the flag at her paws. She nodded slightly, and I laughed. "Alright, the flag is up there, which means they'll have to climb the ladder to get it. Who will be jail guard and who will be flag guard?" I asked.
"I'll be jail guard. The jail is in your room, right?" Harvey asked. I nodded.
"I'll be flag guard I guess." Fundy shrugged.
"Ok then, now we just have to wait for the text to the group chat." I said. Everyone broke off into little groups, and I ended up with Finn and Niki, an unlikely pairing. They were talking, presumably for the first time. I just listened, not feeling like saying anything. My mind traveled back to George. Then I heard the telltale ping from my phone and it lit up with a message from the king himself.
Start.
I looked at Finn and Niki.
"Ok, where do we want to be? Should we wait on the front lines for trespassers or go for the flag ourselves?"
"I think I just want to start by being defensive, I'm kind of nervous." Niki said quietly. I nodded, and we hurried out of the pet room. We arrived to the line, the tape defining our territory and theirs. Vurb and Zak sauntered up to the line, faces smug.
"Hello red trash." Zak said while chuckling. I rolled my eyes.
"Hello blue scum." Finn snarled, eyes meeting Zak's. We remained at the front lines for a few minutes, Finn and Vurb hashing it out while Niki looked on shyly. Then, Eret joined the others. They whispered by themselves for a moment, before rushing over the line. That was when we learned Niki was not at all shy when it came to tagging. She sprang into action before I could even comprehend what was happening, first tagging Eret, who was closest to her, then ducking past the pillar and catching Zak, who was far to slow for her, and then finally she spun around and lunged for Vurb, who was too far gone at that point to try and escape. My mouth dropped open.
The three trespassers walked to jail with their heads down. I was still shocked.
"Holy crap Niki, you're fast!" She shrugged and looked at the floor.
"I made it to nationals in track and field in my senior year." She murmured. She and Finn began to converse, laughing. I smiled at the unlikely friendship that probably never would've happened without this move.
Thank god for the not so hype house.
