Finn and Niki wandered off on their own, leaving me alone at the line. I fidgeted with my hands, mind far from the cold hallway. I paced the line, scowling when I saw George and Nick approach. They grinned, Nick sauntering up to the line until his nose was practically touching mine.
"Hello, dreamie." He said, smirking. I shoved him back over his line.
"Sappy wappy, stay on your own slimy territory." I shot back. He put his hand over his heart, as if taken aback.
"Dreamie, I thought we were friends." I turned away, huffing. He laughed. They stayed there for a moment, moving on once they realized I wasn't leaving the border unguarded. I remained there for a while, bored. Finally, Finn ran across the line, out of breath.
"I'm gonna go check out things over there. You mind trading places with me?" I asked. He took a moment to catch his breath before nodding. I slipped over the line, making my way down the stairs quietly. I cursed at how open the stairway was, which was partly good and bad. I was very easily visible, but then again I could hop over the railing to escape if someone came after me. Thankfully, no one seemed to be around. I noted that no one was guarding their side of the border, probably because Niki had caught three of the eight people on their team, leaving only three left not counting the flag and jail guard. I heard footsteps from the hallway to my left, and I ducked behind a pillar, pulling the plant in front of me.
I saw Techno, George and Sap pass by, Techno discussing orders. When they left earshot, I slipped out from behind the pillar, only to hear a whisper.
"Hey boss man." I sighed. The blonde boy and his shorter friend appeared from Eret's room.
"Tommy. Shall we come up with a plan to steal their flag?" He nodded.
"Let's go upstairs, I think Bad and Niki are around here somewhere. The terrarium?" I gestured. They followed as we snuck through the quiet halls. We entered the room full of lush plants, where Niki and Bad were whispering about their plan.
"C'mere you muffins, get down. They're patrolling." We sat down beside the pair.
"What're we gonna do? They're outnumbered but we'll need a distraction." Tubbo murmured. I thought for a moment.
"Why don't Tubbo and Tommy divert their attention." I mused, the parts of the plan coming together in my mind. "Yeah, and then me, Niki and Bad can go after the flag."
"Whatever you say. Let's go before they find us sitting like ducks." Tommy replied. We all stood up. As we exited the terrarium, I heard a voice.
"Hello Tommy." There stood Techno, grinning.
"Now." I whispered. We split in two, Tommy and Tubbo lunging towards the three enemies while the rest of us split off.
"It's a distraction!" George yelled at his teammates, who were going after Tommy and Tubbo. They turned around quickly, coming after us instead. I watched as my plan unraveled, Tommy and Tubbo making it across the line as the three of us got tagged.
"Off to jail with you." Sap said sweetly. We trudged to jail, which was the studio room at the end of the hall on the first floor. Wilbur was standing guard.
"Hello you three, I'm assuming you got caught?" He narrowed his eyes.
"Nope we just came to the jail of our own accord." I retorted.
"Shut up, traitor."
Bad sat down next to me. Niki stayed standing though. She and Will talked for a while, until I saw a flash of blonde in the hall. Tommy and Tubbo stood on either side of the doorway. I put my finger to my lips, gesturing to Niki and Wilbur. Niki turned quickly, seeing them and winking at me, then continuing the conversation with Will. I grinned as Tommy and Tubbo rushed in, much to the surprise of Wilbur, who shouted.
It was too late though, they had already untagged us. Niki giggled and Will glared at her. We hurried up the stairs, crossing back over the line. Then I decided that it was time to steal the flag. I gathered Tommy, Tubbo, Bad, and Finn and we ran across the line and down the stairs. Techno and the others followed us down the stairs, but I pulled ahead of the group and quickly dropped into Techno's room, grabbing the flag out of an unsuspecting Ponk's watchful gaze, and hurried out. I kept running, even though my legs were burning. Tommy was dodging all three enemies in the main room, and he saw me as I ran through.
"You got this boss man!" He yelled after me as I raced up the stairs, leaping over the line. I cheered, waving the flag high over my head. George was the first to meet me upstairs.
"You suck." He said grudgingly. "But good job, I guess." He muttered. My cheeks felt hot for a moment, before I brushed it off. Soon, everyone gathered around the line. My teammates congratulated me while the opposing team grumbled.
"Hey, everybody gather around! Let's take a picture!" I pulled out my phone, leaning into the group. I snapped a photo. I split off from the group with George, and we went and hung out in the terrarium.
"How do you suppose these flowers evolved?" George asked, his voice soft. I shrugged, thinking for a moment.
"Each one decided, on it's own time, that it was ok to be unique." George laughed quietly.
"How do you always have the right answer?" He asked, an edge of seriousness in his tone. I met his eyes, staring into the chocolate brown depths.
"I don't. No one does. But George, you should know," he touched the petal of a pretty blush colored flower. "you don't have to choose your uniqueness when everyone else does. It takes time to figure out who you want to be." I wondered if I should listen to my own advice, and unfold that dusty bisexual flag in the back of my closet.
In time, I thought.
