"What do you think they're gonna do with the Grounder?" Jasper asked, sorting through the rations of nuts. Monty and I looked at each other.
"I'd rather not think about it," I said, busying myself. I hated to see Octavia so upset.
"Well, it's been days since Bellamy captured him. How long till his friends come looking?" Jasper pressed. Monty rolled his eyes, trying to get past the subject.
"Cheer up. In that time, we'll all be dead from hypothermia." He took one of the nuts from the rations and tossed it into Jasper's mouth. They cheered, high-fiving. I chuckled, shaking my head. We took turns tossing food into each others' mouths, watching Clarke and Bellamy leave camp to go get supplies from some old hideout or something. Monty hit my arm, getting my attention.
"Earth is scary. It's amazing fresh air, trees, nuts. These taste better than usual, right? Oh, I'd like to give earth a giant hug."
"Monty? Is something wrong?" I put my hands on his shoulders, looking at Jasper with a puzzled look on my face. He shrugged, and walked away. I shook Monty a few times, but it didn't seem to do anything. I shook my head and walked away, suddenly feeling... different.
I heard a scream, and whipped my head around to follow it. It was Jasper. He was scrambling around on the ground, trying to stand up.
"Jasper?" I ran up to him, getting him up off the ground. "What's wrong?" He looked at me, confused and stumbled away. He found Octavia and ran to her, grabbing her arms. He began gasping for air while frantically telling her something. She got him to sit down and handed him a stick. He nodded, and for some reason he stayed sitting. rocking back and forth while hugging the stick.***
I woke up just outside the entrance of my tent. I rubbed my eyes, just becoming aware of my splitting headache.
"Agh..." I looked around, trying to cover the sun with my hand to lessen the harsh light. Jasper was sleeping in the same spot Octavia had left him, hugging his stick. Monty had actually made it back to his tent, so I went over to it and woke him up. Once he was fully awake, we started to help get Jasper up.
"I'm pretty sure I ate a pine cone because it told me to," Monty said to no one in particular. Clarke and Bellamy dropped something on the ground, demanding our attention. Rifles. My eyes widened. Did we really need firearms?
"We've been afraid of the Grounders for far too long, and why? Because of their knives and spears. I don't know about you. I'm tired of being afraid." Bellamy shouted. The rest of the camp cheered, and some started to reach to get themselves a gun. Bellamy stepped in front of them.
"These are weapons, ok, not toys, and we have to be prepared to give them up to the guard when the dropships come, but until then, they're gonna help keep us safe." Some of the campers groaned, but most were hit by the reminder that the people from the Ark were still coming down.
"And there are plenty more where these came from," Clarke stepped out next to Bellamy. "Tomorrow, we start training, and if the grounders come, we're gonna be ready to fight."hehe
