"We've been in here for hours. If it really was Bellamy-" I was leaning against the metal bunk beds, facing Jasper and Monty.
"It was Bellamy. I'm telling you, he's here." Jasper insisted.
"But it doesn't make any sense!" We were fully arguing now. I was trying very hard to keep my voice down, but arguing in whispers doesn't usually work out.
"I know what I saw." He turned to walk away.A buzz sounded, signaling the door being opened.
I whipped my head around to see about a dozens guards spill into the dorms, followed by Dr. Tsing.
"Oh, not again." Fox moaned, and everyone shrank back away from the guards.
"Back off! Move to the sides!" The guards barked at us, poking us with their guns. They moved for Harper. She cried out. Monty jumped in front of her to shield her from the guards.
"No! Get away from her!"
As the guards peeled Monty away, Dr. Tsing stopped them.
"No, not her. She needs more time to recover." She squinted at all of us, moving down the line and scanning us.
"This one."
The guards dropped Harper and dragged a boy out of the crowd, ignoring his pleas. We were all too afraid to fight back, so we watched in horror as they pulled the screaming boy down the hall.
"Stop!" Jasper stepped in front of us, facing Dr. Tsing. "You can't keep doing this to us. President Wallace said we could go."
"That President Wallace is no longer in command." Dr. Tsing smiled. "He had to step down for... health reasons. I'm sorry it has to be like this. I hope you know you're all incredibly special to us." She turned on her heel, followed by the remaining two guards. They locked the door with a buzz as we sat in silence, stunned. After another hour of murmuring to each other and silent tears, Jasper stood and walked to the radio. He turned it all the way up and called us close.
"I have a plan." A few people groaned.
"I'm going to ignore that. We have to fight back. Or, something like that. Yes, we're prisoners. But let's face it. We've been prisoners before. This time, we'll do better. When they come for us in an hour, we're going to stand together. They won't get any more of us." We all muttered our agreement and understanding. We waited the hour, planning and preparing.•••
"Get back!" The guards had, yet again, rushed into the room. This time, we linked our arms, standing in two lines.
I cursed myself for agreeing. We were sitting ducks.
Tsing went along the organized line.
"This one." She nodded to the guards and they reached for the girl. We held tight, and they pulled harder. Eventually we split, and fights broke out. I got tripped by one of the kids who tried to run, and fell to the ground, bashing my cheek onto the hard floor. A guard started kicking me, and soon all of the 47, or 45 now, were in someway getting beat by guards. Tsing called them out, taking the girl with them. As much as it hurt, I stood. I grabbed other kids and got everyone standing.
"So, that didn't work." Miller said grimly.
"We can't do that again. We were sitting ducks, and we have no weapons to fight back with. I say next time we just run for it." I suggested. Jasper shook his head and chuckled. We all turned to look at him, completely shocked at his laughter.
"Not quite." He held up a gun.
"Where did you get that?" Monty gasped.
"It was Bellamy," He whispered. "He's here, and disguised as a guard. He's working on a plan to get us out now, and all we have to do is fight back harder next time."
"With one gun? Against their military grade armor and weapons? No way." Miller scoffed.
"If only there were weapons for the rest of us..." I muttered, looking around the room. I leaned against the metal bunk beds and took a glance at everyone's belongings. They'd taken our weapons right at the start, and all anyone had was a book or accessory or some kind. The bed squeaked, struggling with all of my body weight against it. That was the thing with those beds. They were weak and squeaky. It sometimes felt like the rods would fall off if you moved too much. Rods...
"Guys." I spoke up. "The beds."
"Very very observant, Cressida. Those are certainly beds." Miller rolled his eyes.
"No, no. The rods on them. They're loose, see?" I struggled for a bit, but pulled one off the nearest bedframe. I mimed hitting something with it.
"Yeah? Yeah? Come on, guys, it's the best we've got."
Jasper stood next to me.
"Everyone, grab a rod and hide it behind your back. We'll link arms again and when they come back we will take them by surprise."
Miller nodded, then held out his hand. Jasper looked at him oddly, then reached out to shake it.
"Do you want me to spit on my hand or...?"
"No, you ass. I'll take the gun." He stepped closer.
"No way. Bellamy gave it to me." Jasper took a step back and held the gun closer to him.
"Yeah, but I'm the better gunner."
Jasper just stared him down until Miller let out an exasperated sigh and walked away, ripping a rod off his bedframe.•••
We waited for hours and hours and hours.
"What's taking Bellamy so long?" Monty sighed, breaking the silence.
"I don't know." Jasper mumbled.
"Maybe they caught him." Miller suggested, swinging his rod around like a bat.
"No!" Jasper insisted. "He'll find a way out. I know he will."
I reached out to touch his arm.
"Jasper, it's already been four hours. The guards will be back any second."
"They're gonna take someone else." Harper croaked, still leaning against a bed.
"No. Listen to me. Everyone, we stick to the plan. They're not taking anyone else out of this room without a fight!" Jasper urged everyone into position.Footsteps.
"Ready..." He whispered. Dr. Tsing strutted into the room this time. She knew what she wanted. She approached me, Jasper, and Monty and studied our faces. She knew we were closest to Jasper. I bit back a gasp when I was hit with the realization. She knew he was our leader. The doctor wanted to break Jasper.
"This one." She pointed her pen. It took me a second to process the eye contact. She was pointing at me.
"No, no-" I shrieked, thrashing against the guards as they tried to pull me out of the room.
Hey! Get your hands off her!" Jasper yelled, pulling out the gun. I tried to tell him to stop. The gun wouldn't work now. I struggled and struggled but the guards had an iron grip. I met Monty's terrified eyes, both of us tearing up. I went limp, accepting my fate when I heard a gunshot.
No. Everyone froze.
"Take him instead." The guards dropped me to the ground and trampled over me. They grabbed Jasper's arms and ran out. He was calling out, yelling for help. I scrambled to crawl after him, screaming back incoherently when a guard kicked me in the face.
I laid on the ground, watching my friends beat the guards with the bedframe rods.
It appeared that we were losing, until the guards started yelling and an alarm started blaring.Containment breach on Level 5.
The guards crumpled to the ground and my eyes locked with Miller's. I reached up, and he grabbed my hand and pulled me to my feet. I was dizzy, but I'd survive. I followed him out the door and to the elevator where Monty, Jasper, and Harper were watching Dr. Tsing burn to her death.
