I dragged a chair to Jasper from across the room, followed by Miller with a bedframe.
"Where do you want these?"
"Put it here," Jasper pointed to the barricade. "Over the weak spots to make sure they don't get in. We took the level but now we need to hold it. They will be coming and we need to be ready. Harper. Get some glasses from the kitchen. Fill them with water, big as you can find."
She nodded and limped away towards the kitchen.
"Fox, get those hallway cameras next." She was holding a bar and had hit out almost all of the cameras in the level. Monty stepped out.
"Nope, leave the hallway cameras. We need eyes out there."
"You can do that?" I asked, securing the chair and shifting some other items around.
"Have you met me?" He smirked, but the smile didn't reach his eyes. Jasper followed Monty off to the doors, leaving me with Fox. She looked petrified. I approached her and put my hand on her shoulder.
"We're not ready for this!" She insisted. I bit back a, "too bad, we have to be" and smiled at her.
"Yes, we are. Don't worry. Just stick to the plan."
Jasper came up behind us and swiveled his axe up onto his shoulder.
"You'll be okay, Fox. I promise. You too, Cress. We'll all be okay." He walked away, checking in on everyone. Monty was hunched over the screen that showed the hallway. He held up a hand and silenced the room.
"Wait. Some of them aren't wearing hazmat suits."
"And? What's that mean?" Miller looked over Monty's shoulder at the screen.
"It means the marrow treatment worked. They're cured." I said grimly. Murmurs flitted amongst the 45. We were silenced by a crash and the muffled voice of a guard.
"Get ready.." Jasper called out to the rest of us.
A grenade was tossed into the room. One just like before we were brought here. Harper snatched it up and put it in the bucket of water she'd collected.
We dropped to the ground. I laid on top of my knife, concealing it but careful not to hurt myself. The barricade fell and the guard filled the room, pointing their guns.
I heard a little splash of water. The guard had picked up the gas grenade. Jasper stood and hit the guard with his axe.
Then, all Hell broke loose.
There was yelling from all directions and blood splattering everywhere. I jumped to my feet, and I was slashing at every guard I could reach, puncturing hazmat suits and stabbing into their legs, arms, torsos, anything. I was tripped and knocked onto my back. My mouth was covered by a guards hand and I was dragged away. No, no, no! Not again, please God, not again. My mind was crying out what my voice couldn't. I struggled and struggled, finally freeing my mouth and letting out the loudest shriek I could muster.
It wasn't heard over the other commotion.
Anyway, it was too late. I was already down the hall and headed to the elevator.
"Jasper! Jasper, Monty! Help, please!"
I dropped to deadweight, but nothing worked. I was headed to the Harvest Chamber.

The guards dragged me into a room filled with empty cages. A chair sat centered all the way at the back of the room.
"No, no!" I cried out, using all of my might to fight against them. I finally wiggled free of his grip and made a break for it. I almost crashed into another one. He was pointing a gun. I backed away, hands in the air. I was cornered, and had nothing to do but comply.
Then, the guard turned and shot the other two. It took me a second, but I recognized him. He really was here.
"Bellamy?" I croaked, then threw myself into his arms. It was never anything I thought I'd do, but he'd just saved my life after I'd done nothing but ignore him and roll my eyes at him.
He was shocked, but after a second or two he awkwardly wrapped his arms back around me and patted my back.
"You're okay."
"Come on, we gotta get her some place safe," Maya interrupted.

After about 15 minutes of silently following little miss Mission Impossible, some reference I'd read in a book from before the nuclear war, we arrived at Maya's apartment.
Before I turned the corner, she stopped short.
"Dad! You're home.."
"Yeah, yeah. The drill bit broke again." He stood up from the couch. We locked eyes and he turned to Maya. "What are they doing here?"
He was a short man, about the same height as Maya. They didn't have any features in common. He had light brown hair, and she had dark, almost black hair.
"They're in trouble," She explained. "They just need some place to say." Her eyes pleaded with her father, leaving me and Bellamy standing awkwardly by the door.
"They need to go. Now." Her father pointed at the door, his face cold. He wasn't having it. I glanced up at Bellamy, but he wouldn't make eye contact with any of us.
"Let me explain." Maya started, but her dad interrupted her.
"I'll let you explain where you got that uniform." He pointed to Bellamy. "Maya, you know how dangerous this is, what are you doing?"
I almost agreed with him, she was putting herself and her family at risk just for us.
"What mom would've done." She held her head high. He sighed, almost defeated. He turned to me and Bellamy.
"I need you to leave."
"I'm afraid we can't do that." Bellamy stared him down. He was about 3 inches taller than Maya's father.
"It's okay. He's gonna help us."
"Really? Because I'm not getting that." Bellamy still had his hand over his gun.
I wanted to pitch in, but there was nothing I could say. What would it be, "I don't like your daughter one bit, but I will still mooch off of whatever she offers"? I kept quiet.
"My parents were part of a movement that was against using outsider blood. My mom refused the treatments and it killed her." Maya turned back to her father. "She was willing to die for what she believed."
His face dropped. She'd brought up a touchy subject.
"Maya," His voice softened. "You were five. I couldn't leave you alone."
She gritted her teeth.
"I'm not a little girl anymore."
"They're willing to kill you to get them. If you get caught-" Her father warned, but she cut him off.
"We won't if you help us."
He looked around, gears turning in his head. It wasn't a hard decision. Keep he and his daughter safe, or harbor criminals? He had every right to just throw us out.
"Please, sir. They're killing us. We've nowhere else to go." I chimed in.
"Just this once," He caved in. "Just for one night."
I nodded my thanks.
"Here, just this way." Maya guided me around a corner to a room.
"Bellamy and I have to leave, but I need you to stay here. We have to keep you safe."
I hated this. I was being treated like a child. But it was this or being killed for bone marrow, so I complied.
"Thank you so much, Maya."

And there I sat. Rocking back and forth, messing around with their stuff, and snooping. I knew I shouldn't, but I was so so bored. It had been well over an hour when everyone started pouring into the apartment.
"Oh, thank God." I muttered, running over to them. I scanned the crowd, finding Miller first. I ran to hug him, then Harper, then Monty.
"Hey... Where's Jasper?"
He trailed in at the back of the crowd, Maya not far behind. I ignored her and run up to him, pulling him into a bone-crushing hug.
"Don't scare me like that again, I almost lost you twice in 6 hours. "
I laughed, not pulling away. I wanted to revel in this moment for as long as I could.
