CHAPTER THREE // GEEK GUTS
"WE COULD THROW MERLE OFF THE ROOF,
HIS UGLY FACE WILL DISTRACT THEM."

Jade was sitting on one of the steps on the roof with Glenn sitting beside her, the boy wiping off the drying blood with a shirt they had found in the building. He had been using water from his canteen to wet the shirt in order to get the blood off easier, despite the girls pleads not to waste drinking water.

She was avoiding his kind gaze as she watched T-Dog sitting a few feet away, leaned on the ledge as he tried to get in contact with the group. "I still can't believe you did that." Glenn muttered, softly wiping underneath the girls nose.

"Did what?" Jade asked, finally meeting his stare, causing a slight blush to rise to her cheeks.

"Fought Merle Dixon." He answered, glancing back at the man with anger. He had felt a pit form in his stomach as he heard the girls cries of pain as he kicked her. Seeing Jade at the end of a gun terrified him, the thought of her dying scared him more than the geeks that flooded the streets below them. When Merle had finally stood up it felt like he could breathe again as he pulled the girl closer to him and away from the redneck.

"He deserved it after what he called T. I got a few hits in before he beat my ass." She answered with a light laugh, not realizing how scary the fight had been for him.

"Elizabeth..."

"What? And why are you calling me that?" Jade questioned as she looked back to the buildings in the distance.

"Because I like it. It's a pretty name. You should hear it more often." Glenn simply replied with a shrug. "Beautiful name for a beautiful girl."

"Shut up." She muttered, smiling over at him as he set the now bloodstained shirt down beside him. Her cheeks were red as she looked down to her boots, butterflies arose in her stomach, making her feel almost nauseas as she ran a hand over her hair.

"Hey, Glenn, check the alley." Morales called out, Glenn soon moving to his feet and running to the opposite edge of the building. "You see any manhole covers?"

"No, must be all out on the street where the geeks are." He answered, running back to the group, stopping behind Jade, resting a hand on her shoulder.

"Maybe not." Jacqui started, turning away from where she had been looking at the street below. "Old building like this built in the 20s, big structures often had drainage tunnels into the sewers in case of flooding down in the subbasements."

"How do you know that?" Jade asked, her eyebrows furrowing as she looked towards the woman.

"It's my job- was. I worked in the city zoning office." She answered with a nod.

"Well, lets go check then." Jade spoke, standing from her spot before to the stairwell. T-Dog had stayed on the roof as he continued to try and get in contact with the camp to tell them of the predicament.

Once they had gotten to the basement, a large hole could be seen near the corner with a ladder going inside and a railing surrounding it.

"This is it? Are you sure?" Morales asked as they all stared down at the murky water.

"Glenn and I scoped this place out before, it's the only thing that goes down." Jade answered as she pointed her flashlight down the hole.

"But we've never gone down it." Glenn continued with a gulp. "Who'd want to right?" Jade looked up from the water, watching as everyone else turned their heads toward the two of them. "Oh, great."
