"What the hell is that?" you shrieked and covered your ears. The other employee stood up and you could see that it was the toothpick guy from a month ago. He looked as panicked as you did-- which brought you no comfort-- and you whipped your head around the room. The entire building was apparently going into a lockdown, the elevator had a metal mesh that dropped down in front of it and the windows had an entire sheet block them down. The lights were shut off and the only source of light was the alarms littered across the room.
The sound was deafening and you ran to the emergency stairwell and tried to open the door, but it was locked tight. "Wifi is cut!" Toothpick man shouted towards you and you looked back towards him in a panic. You heard the sound of the computers shutting down as the whirring slowed to a stop. You ran over towards your desk and fiddled with it trying to spark some life back into the thing. Toothpick man ran to your side,
"What're we gonna to do?" he asked you and gripped your upper arm. You looked back at him and shrugged your shoulders. You pulled out your phone and saw that you had no cell reception and no way to contact anyone. You were screwed. The toothpick man pulled out his phone and had the same bad luck as you. You slumped into your chair and tried to calm your breathing and toothpick man started pacing back and forth.
"Look!" He shouted and pointed towards the elevator's sign-- which was miraculously still working-- and you watched the floor number drop closer and closer to your own floor and your heart almost beat out of your chest.
"HIDE!" You screamed and you and toothpick man scurried around the floor trying to hide from whoever was coming down. Your eyes landed on a set of doors and you crawled inside them and shut the door. You could barely hear your own panting breaths over the loud alarm that still blared around the floor. Your whole body was shaking and you could hear your own heartbeat. The loudness of the alarm was adding to your headache along with the flashing red light.
The elevator dinged and you heard someone start cussing. You felt the room get hotter and saw a bright light seeping into the cracks in the closet door. Your hands tightened into a fist and you frantically looked for anything to defend yourself. You found nothing and you panicked over the absent ability to defend yourself. Your shaking body was clattering against the wall and you forced yourself to calm down.
"Dr. Clermont?" You heard a small voice say and you went completely still. You immediately recognized the voice as Salim's from when you talked to him a mere hour or so ago. He must have used his magic to get down to you, but why in hell would he want to talk to you. You heard the kids barefoot steps on the floor and saw the bright light getting closer to your hiding spot.
"I-I won't hurt you I promise. I just... I just need to talk to you." He spoke again and this time the voice was louder yet shaky. You could guess that he was nearing the door, and you silently hoped the toothpick man wouldn't tell him where you were.
"I-I saw your name on the-the list for the uhm floor in the ele-elevator." he explained and the light seeping in illuminated the closet you were hiding in and the voice was practically outside the door. "I need... I need your help." He spoke softly this time and you were seriously debating if you should leave the closet. Luckily you didn't have time to decide for yourself.
"Hey kid," Fucking toothpick man, "she's in the closet behind ya lil buddy." Your body shook once more and you opened the closet door softly in case you bumped into him.
"H-Hey Salim, what're you doing here?" You asked as softly as you could over the screaming alarm and the kid immediately hugged you as soon as you were out of the closet. His body was warm and the kid was shaking as bad as you were. You hugged him back without a second thought and glared over his shoulder to toothpick man who was standing with his hands in the air.
