Ch#39 The Great Escape

While everyone else went to sleep, I crawled out from my blanket to gaze at the world outside through the little windows. The sky was dark with a few little stars twinkling brightly. Subconsciously, a smile crawled my lips. These windows, they are small, but provide so much comfort sometimes.

"Can't fall asleep?" I turned around to the source of the voice.

"Hey, Terrence." He nodded and stood beside me. He looked up at the sky, closed his eyes and took a deep breath in. I smiled thinking how these little windows provide comfort to many others as well.

"Big day ahead. Just can't find myself sleeping", I shrugged. We continued to gaze at the sky in silence. It wasn't the awkward kind silence. It felt good.

"Hey, I'm sorry", he broke in my train of thoughts.

"For what?"

"For not helping Louis when you screamed at the top of your lungs and turning a blind eye", he explained.

"Well, I can't tell I forgive you. But I don't hate you either. Louis too wouldn't want me to loathe you", I conveyed.

"You know, ever since Louis passed away, I've been getting these nightmares. That very scene when Dave stabbed him keeps repeating every time. I've been living in guilt since then. I don't think I can handle the guilt of helping Dave in killing more lives. You were right. My sister wouldn't be proud of me. She would rather die than be able to live her dream at the cost of so many innocent lives", he expressed. I did not know what to say, so I remained silent.

"Once you go back home, try sleeping while listening to soft music. It helps with nightmares. My sister used to get them for a while after her accident. Music helped her heal", he advised.

"How did you know I get nightmares?", I inquired and he raised his eyebrows at me. I then remembered how I had announced before everyone that Riley is the cause of my nightmares.

"Oh, I remember. I basically shouted out in front of everyone the other day. You must have heard then", I cleared.

"No. I mean, yeah, I did hear you that day. But, me and Matt, we've seen you waking up from sleep and hyperventilating. We have seen you cry in pain", he explained.

"Oh. That sounds a little embarrassing", I replied with an awkward smile.

"It's not. That was one of the major reasons we agreed to help you. Although we don't know the details, we did decipher that Riley almost killed you years back which left you traumatized. Yet, you're here to save her on her request. I had never met such a person ever in my life. The humans I had seen were only the selfish and greedy ones who show no mercy on people below them. The ones who would go to any extent to take revenge. You are nothing like that. You have a beautiful heart, Alana. You are a good person", he remarked while I only smiled at him gratefully.

We then spoke no more and continued to look up at the sky. After a while, we bid our goodnights and went to sleep. We can't fight the guards being sleepy, now, can we?

Morning came and everyone seemed nervous. I was too. We did not have a fool-proof plan. It is just a rough sketch. We couldn't guarantee the success rate. But we were ready to try. Ready to fight Dave. And that is what matters.

The day passed by in a blur. We had our lunch and waited for an hour or so for the kitchen maids to leave. As soon as they left, we made sure they wouldn't return back and barged into the kitchen. We grabbed all kinds of frying pans and vessels. Even spatulas and the knives. After arming ourselves with all sorts of 'weapons' we went back to the main room of the Base. We waited for the sun to set to initiate our plan.
