Ch#34 The Selfish World

"Now let's get something into your belly."

"Stop acting like her Mom, Beth", Ellis grumbled.

"You haven't eaten anything as well. Now, stop complaining and have this sandwich, both of you. We saved it for you guys", she mentioned. I felt grateful and accepted her offer of her sandwich. To be honest, my insides did not feel well yet, but I had to stuff something into my growling belly. I need to fill my stomach to strengthen my weakened body. After all, I need to fight Dave. I must make Louis proud.

While we were filling our stomach, Terrence walked up to us. My blood started to boil in anger when I saw him. Bloody liar.

"Good to see you smiling", he said with a smile. I clenched my jaw in an effort to suppress my anger. I did not want to speak to a bastard like him. But in vain. I stood up from the chair and slapped him across his cheeks. Judging from his widened eyes and shocked face, he totally did not see that coming.

"Don't tell me you expected me to welcome you warmly", I snorted.

"I didn't, but I did not expect a slap either. I came here to let you know that we gave Louis a decent funeral."

I couldn't believe my ears. "How could you? How could you give him a funeral? Did your conscience let you do it? You're so much more worse than Dave. At least, he doesn't lie to get his work done. Just to what level will you stoop down for money. Is the money that you receive worth the deed that you guys do?" I snapped at him.

"Do not speak about us carelessly without even knowing anything." He had the audacity to speak back.

"Without knowing anything, huh? Well, then enlighten me. Just for what good cause are you guys doing such horrid actions?"

"You won't understand even if I tell you," he sighed.

"You are no different from Dave. He is a psychopath crazy for money. You guys, being sane, are also crazy for money. Remember, one day, you will lose your loved one too, in a dreadful manner." I walked away from him, not wanting to look at his face anymore.

"Do you have a sister? Do you know what it feels like to desperately wish for her to survive and stay by your side?", Matt, who had been watching everything from a distance, spoke.

"Matt, no. Don't." Terrence walked up to him to stop him.

"Don't stop me, Terrence. She needs to know. She must know just why exactly we work for Dave, even though we hate him with a passion." Matt walked towards me, rage clearly filled in his eyes.

"Terrence has a sister whose dream is to be a painter. Painting is her life. She breathes through the art she paints. But a year back, she met with an accident, due to which she has now become partially blind. If she won't get the surgery done soon, she might lose her eyesight forever. And if that happens, she won't be able to live anymore. Painting is what keeps her alive. It means everything to her. Not being able to do something for which we live, eats up our insides. We were not born with a silver spoon in our mouth. We did not have the money to pay for her surgery. Neither do we have parents to lean on for support. Terrence did all kinds of odd jobs to earn money and I followed him behind. When he passed through this Academy, he thought he might be able to get some job here, at least that of a janitor. But Dave instead offered him to be a spy. He promised he would pay loads. Which brother wouldn't accept the job to save his dying sister? And that is why we did what we did. We may not be biologically related, but he is more than a brother to me. He saved me when I was dying due the mental stress I received from my bullies. We are not bad people, it's the circumstances that made us bad", he concluded. Both of their eyes were filled with tears. I felt sad for the sister, but their reason did not kill my anger. What kind of a sister in this world would be happy to know the kind of deeds her brother did in order to save her? Definitely, not me.

"You're right. I don't have a sister. I don't know what it feels like to desperately wish for her to live and stay by my side". I saw relief spread on their face but it did not last long.

"But I am a sister. I would never be happy if I came to know that my brother killed someone to save me. I would not be proud to be called a murderer's sister. 'Cause just as how important I am to him, the person he killed would also have been important to someone else." I could see them pondering over my words. All this while they believed they have been doing the right thing. They did not have anybody to show them the right path.

I felt it funny how the world runs. As long as my belongings, my people are safe, I don't care about what others go through. This is what the majority of the people of today's world think. They never even give a second's thought to the lives of the people that they destroy. And that is what was running in Matt and Terrence's head too.

"But why must I be selfless when the world is selfish?", Terrence asked.

"I'm not telling you to be selfless. Just don't be so selfish that you forget who you actually are. 'Cause the most miserable people in this selfish world are those who only care about themselves, understand only their troubles and see only their perspective to an extent where they forget the very reason for which they are being selfish. The next time you pull such an act, I hope your sister's face flashes before your eyes", I concluded and left the main room. But I made sure to catch their guilty faces.

In a way, he is right. What is the use of being selfless in this selfish world? After all, all that it gives us is pain and grievances. But he needs to know that his actions were wrong. He needs to know that his sister wouldn't want to fulfill her dream at the cost of someone else's life. He needs to know that he must not make her loathe her brother. 'Cause at the end of the day, he needs someone who truly loves him beside him to remain strong in this selfish world. And for him, his sister might be that someone.
