It was Chris' turn to stand guard and I couldn't sleep.

I was tossing and turning, but just couldn't get comfortable at all. It sucked.

Before long I gave up and slowly walked over to the tree Chris was sitting under. He looked sad, but he hid it well.

"What's the matter?" I whispered to him. Chris shook his head.

"N-nothing." He said and I could tell he was lying. Chris is such a bad liar, you can always tell when he's lying.

"You'd think after all these years I could tell when you are lying." I said and he nodded. I hope I didn't upset him.

"So what is it?" I asked again. Hoping that Chris would finally tell me. Nothing.

I decided to change the subject.

"Hey maybe you could take my college courses with me?" I asked him, but that only made him more upset.

"That'll be the day." Chris said with disappointment laced in his voice.

"Why not. Your smart!" I exclaimed and he just shook his head and hung it low.

"They won't let me." He said again fiddling with the gun in his hands.

"What do you mean?" I asked as I knitted my eyebrows together.

"It's like the way they think of my family in this town is the way they think of me. I'm just a low life Chambers kid." Chris said. Maybe, I got it out of him.

"That's not true." I tried to reason with him. It didn't work.

"Oh it is. No one even asked me if I took the milk money that time, I just got a three day vacation." Chris explained and he was right. But that wasn't his fault.

"Well, didn't you take it?" I asked him a little confused.

"Yeah I took it. You knew I took it. Teddy knew, even Vern and Gordie I think." Chris said, his eyes getting glossy.

"Maybe I was sorry and I tried to give it back." Chris said and I turned towards him.

"You tried to give it back!" I said a little too loudly. I shut my mouth after.

"Maybe, just maybe. And maybe I took it to old lady Simons and told her, and the money was all there but I still got a three day vacation because it never showed up." Chris said quickly, his tone getting angrier with each word.

I couldn't believe that women.

With me obviously having nothing else to say. Chris continued.

"And maybe the next day old lady Simons had this brand new skirt on when she came to school." Chris said. I remember that ugly ass skirt.

"That skirt was ugly anyways Chris." I said trying to lighten the mood.

"Yeah so let's just say that I stole the milk money, but bold lady Simons stole it back from me." Chris said, "just suppose that I told this story. Me Chris Chambers, kid brother to Eyeball Chambers you think anyone would believe it?" He asked.

"No." I said quietly.

"And do you think that bitch would've dared they something like that if it had been one of those douche bags from up on the view if they had taken the money?" Chris said. I never liked when he sweared.

"No way." I said again.

"Hell no!" Chris said sitting back against the tree, "but with me. I'm sure she had her eye on that skirt for a long time. Anyways she saw her chance and she took it. I was the stupid one for trying to give it back."

I couldn't say anything to him.

"I just never thought...." I looked over and Chris was near to crying, "I never though that the teacher....oh who gives a fuck anyways?" Chris broke down.

He acted so tough around me, but I think I broke him this time.

"I do. I really do and it's gonna be ok." I said to him wrapping my arms around him.

I couldn't bare him crying like this.

"I just wish. I couldn't go someplace where nobody's knows me." Chris said crying into my shirt. I tried to calm him down.

"I guess I'm just a pussy huh?" Chris said to me.

"No no your not. You're not. Chris, if I have to force you to take those college courses with me. I will, because your gonna be big. Your gonna achieve something Chris I know. I don't give a fuck about your family, I give a fuck about you." I said with tears falling down.

Chris wasted no time before pressing his lips to mine. I didn't hesitate to kiss back immediately.
