When the serious topic has been discussed, Jay immediately switches back to his savage and playful self. 'Cool, now we can talk about the real interesting stuff. How deep did you fall for Nick on a scale from one to ten.'
Jake instantly forgets about his tears and sighs dreamily as he leans onto the air mattress again. 'Hundred.'
'Eek, cliché-' Jay pretends to puke.
'Why, do you mind?'
'No, not at all. Why would I care about your love life? As long as you don't go around raping people.'
Jake doesn't know how to reply to that.
'But for real, Nick's got the best of you, so I wouldn't oppose even if I had the right.' Jay says. His eyes are sparkling as he cups his face in his hands like Jake and says: 'I ship.'
'I'm not sure whether he likes me back though.' Jake expresses his concerns worriedly. 'I don't want to force him into liking me.'
'Sweets, he cares more about you than anyone else, is very invested in your life, he is literally so deep in that the last ingredient for true love is physical attraction. But I don't know about that. You were holding hands just now though.'
'Um, we've... kissed.' admits Jake. Thinking of the three kisses just now and Tuesday morning, he blushes a bit.
'For real? Who initiated it though?'
'Um...' Jake thinks out loud. 'Mostly Nick? First time I almost kissed him but stopped, he kissed me later. Second time was an accident, third time he did it, the fourth time he initiated it but I was the one who kissed him in the end.'
'Four times?!' Jay bangs his head on the air mattress. 'Why are y'all so dumb? Kissing isn't something you do when there's nothing between you two at all. Well, you would, but not Nick. D*mmit, I'm already so done with these dense people and I've only met like three.'
'But-' Jake protests.
'No buts. You just need to claim Nick ASAP, before it's too late. Life goes way too fast to stand still.'
'Wait, what? Where'd you get that quote from?' Jake asks.
'From my own genius brain.' Jay grins.
'Oh, someone told me the exact same thing earlier this week.'
'Great minds think alike.' Jay shrugs. 'I did get that one from the internet.' he adds.
'Wow, I guess...'
'So, like I was saying, you should just confess. I waited for Joshua for three years only to find out that he already knew.'
'D*mn.' says Jake. 'I have never been in love for that long.'
'No, your max is probably like a week.'
'Something like that.' Jake says. 'Nick is my first love. Maybe I had feelings for him earlier and didn't notice, but in all cases the realization started to kick in last Friday and I acknowledged it last Sunday.'
'I take back what I said about going too fast. I think you go too fast for life instead. Holy crap.'
'I don't like slow.' Jake says.
'Except when it comes to confessing, I guess.'
'No, I'm going to confess. Tonight.' Jake promises, a sudden confidence taking over him. 'We're together pretty much 24/7, just waiting and waiting is pointless anyway.'
He turns around and looks at the beach. 'We've drifted away so f*cking far.'
'Oh sh*t.' says Jay, who turns around as well. 'Let's go back.'
Jake nods. 'Thanks for listening to my sh*t, Jay.'
'No problem, I love gay shit.' says Jay.
'Great.' says Jake.
Jay nods.
Jake nods as well.
And then they turn the air mattress so they can swim back to the beach.
