The results were in.
Everyone, who was in school today, were all waiting in the Cafeteria for our names to be called, so our lives can be decided.
I'm sitting in the usual soot with Christina, Zeke, Uriah, Marlene, Lynn, and Shauanna. They were about has nervous as I was, besides Uriah who didn't care. Christina wanted to go into fashion and makeup, Zeke like me wants to be a lawyer or a fitness trainer, Lynn wants to work for the government system, and Marlene and Shaunna both want to start a daycare business. Everyone had a life plan, besides Uriah.
And Tris?
She hasn't told me what she wanted to be. The test can't tell her either, since she won't be here. To be honest, I can't see her as in doing anything. She could probably do every job in the world if she wanted too.
"Tobias Mason Eaton!" My name is called. Everyone shoots me a 'good luck' look and I head off into the office. I cross my fingers as I sit down in the chair.
Our Principle, Ms. Mathews sits in her black chair looking evil as usual. I hated her so much, but I never let her know it. I heard that it's really rough to be on her bad side. The last kid who talked back to her was said to not even show his face to the school for a whole month. And when he came back- it was to clean out his locker, because he was moving.
What's different between me and everyone else in this situation, is that my dad talks to Ms. Mathews A LOT. If one thing goes wrong in school I'm good as dead.
"Tobias! Long time no see. How have you been?" She asks, situating herself.
"I'm excellent, and you? Might I say you look younger then the last I saw you." Blah. I almost vomited. She looks like an old cow that was run over by a bus.
"Oh Tobias! Don't flatter me. And I've been better. How's your father?"
I grit my teeth. "He's fine."
"That's it?"
I nod. "Not to cut off this lovely conversation," ugh, "but I was wondering if I could get my results now? I have a lot of studying to do."
She smiles and starts collecting papers. "Why of course! Silly me. Give me just a few seconds."
I wait forever until she finally pulls out a small file with my name on it. "Tobias Mason Eaton. 18. Divergent High. 6'2. 162p. Parents are Marcus Eaton and Evelyne Johnson. Career.... It looks like your tests have indicated that you would be perfect for the following jobs," she clears her throat and continues, "Scientist. Computer Programer. Government. Lawyer. Good job, Tobias."
I smile, thank her, and leave as fast as I can. When the group sees my smiling face, they know I got the job I wanted.
"Good job, Bro!" Zeke cheers. We all chatter about our lives after, until school was finally dismissed.
(Still Tobias POV at home)
I quietly walk in through the front door, incase Tris is still asleep. I set my stuff down on the empty couch and walk upstairs to look for her. I hear the water running, which must mean she's in the shower. I hear her humming a song and I put my ear up to listen.
"Are you, are you
Coming to the tree.
I strung up a man,
They say who murdered three.
Strange things have happened here and stranger would they be.
If we met, admit, that in the Hanging Tree."
I smile at the sound of her voice, then walk back downstairs to watch some TV. It was a long day, so I recline back in the chair and start to doze off.
