Chapter 1: An Unexpected Encounter
Alphas, apex predators in the wolf hierarchy, were renowned for their strength, dominance, and often, their ruthlessness. Their high rank commanded fear and respect, sometimes bordering on terror, from all other creatures. Their reputation, however, often preceded them, painting a picture of arrogant, even cruel, individuals. Jungkook, however, defied this stereotype. He was an anomaly, a gentle giant among his kind, an Alpha whose inherent kindness and sweetness earned him not fear, but genuine affection.
Omegas, conversely, occupied the lowest rung of the social ladder. Their perceived fragility and vulnerability made them easy targets, often treated with disdain, their very existence reduced to the unfortunate label of "bed warmer." Taehyung, however, was a striking exception to this rule. He possessed a captivating blend of sass and innocence, a nonchalant disregard for social hierarchy that was both intriguing and endearing. He was anything but meek, possessing a sharp wit and a rebellious spirit that defied expectations.
Taehyung was in a frantic rush, his mind consumed by the upcoming job interview at J's Company. Today was the day he could finally escape the precariousness of his current situation.
"Come on, hurry up! You're going to be late!" Nicole, his beta roommate, leaned against the doorframe, her voice a mixture of exasperation and concern. Though not yet mated—a rarity for betas—she'd been marked by a partner, a significant difference from Taehyung's unmated status. They'd shared a cramped apartment for months while Taehyung searched for stable employment, a temporary arrangement born out of necessity.
"It's your fault! You didn't wake me up. I told you to!" Taehyung grumbled, his voice tight with frustration as he wrestled with his shoes. His usual playful sass was edged with the stress of the impending interview.
Nicole sighed, shaking her head. "What's the point of an alarm clock if you're going to ignore it?" she muttered, finally leaving him to his preparations.
Taehyung snatched his bag and bolted out the door, hailing a taxi that thankfully arrived promptly. He adjusted his black necktie, striving for a professional appearance that would hopefully impress his potential employers.
"We're here," the taxi driver announced, pulling up to the imposing J's Company building.
Taehyung paid the fare and hurried inside, his heart pounding. It was already 8:30 AM; the interview was scheduled for 9:00 AM. He reached the elevators, his breath catching in his throat as he waited. He fumbled in his bag for his interview documents, only to be abruptly shoved aside by a group of people.
"What the hell?!" he exclaimed, his voice sharp with indignation. An Alpha, flanked by two imposing guards, had barged into the elevator, completely ignoring his presence.
"Just take another elevator. The CEO needs this one," one of the guards barked, his tone dismissive.
Taehyung bristled at the blatant disregard for his presence. “I don’t care! I was here first! Don’t be unfair just because your boss is an Alpha!” he retorted, planting himself firmly in the elevator doorway.
A deep, melodious voice cut through the tension. "It's alright, I apologize. You seem eager. If you wish, we can share the elevator."
Taehyung looked up, momentarily stunned. The voice belonged to a strikingly handsome man, impeccably dressed in a crisp white shirt and black trousers. His features were sharp and defined, his eyes holding a hint of amusement.
Taehyung, despite his initial anger, found himself momentarily speechless. "I don't want to share," he finally managed, his voice regaining its usual sass.
"Hey! Don't you know—" one of the guards started to interject.
The handsome man smoothly interrupted. "It's quite alright. You may go in now." He stepped aside, allowing Taehyung to enter the elevator alone.
Taehyung, still fuming, stepped inside, muttering under his breath as the doors slid shut.
Inside J's Company, Jimin, a pink-haired beta, watched Jungkook, the CEO, with amusement.
"Looks like you met someone who doesn't know who you are," Jimin chuckled.
"He seems to be in a hurry," Jungkook replied, a gentle smile playing on his lips. The encounter clearly hadn't ruffled his feathers.
Jimin sighed. "You're too kind for an Alpha. Use your CEO card, for goodness sake. It wouldn't hurt."
"I don't want to," Jungkook responded, his tone firm but gentle. "I'm sure he'd feel ashamed if I used my position to overrule him."
"But I still don't like how he acted like he owned the elevator," Jimin muttered. "It's big enough for both of you."
Jungkook chuckled. "I don't want to cause a scene. He'd probably get angry."
"Whatever," Jimin conceded, shaking his head.
They entered the elevator, accompanied by their respective guards.
In the interview waiting area, a young woman, clearly an assistant in her smart business attire, addressed the assembled applicants. "Good morning, everyone. Please wait; the CEO will be slightly delayed, but he'll be here soon. Once he arrives, we can begin the interviews."
Taehyung breathed a sigh of relief; he wasn't late. Among the twenty or so applicants, he sat quietly, his nerves jangling. Then, the unmistakable sound of footsteps echoed through the room. He saw him—the handsome man from the elevator—walking confidently toward them.
"CEO Jeon, the applicants are here," the assistant announced.
Jungkook, the CEO, smiled and nodded, before entering his office. Taehyung’s cheeks flushed crimson; he’d argued with the CEO. He couldn't believe his bad luck. He slumped in his chair, mortified.
"Okay, applicants six through ten, please come in," the assistant announced, opening the door to the interview room.
Taehyung's legs felt like jelly as he stood, his heart pounding in his chest. He entered the room, taking a seat, his eyes darting nervously toward Jungkook. Their gazes met, and Taehyung quickly looked away, his embarrassment overwhelming him.
"You're so stupid, Taehyung," he muttered under his breath.
"Next, Kim Taehyung," Jungkook announced, his voice calm and clear.
Taehyung, lost in his self-recriminations, didn't immediately respond.
"Kim Taehyung! Can you hear me?" Jungkook asked, his voice a little sharper now.
A gentle nudge from the applicant beside him jolted Taehyung back to reality.
"Y-yes?" he stammered, his cheeks burning.
"You're next."
Taehyung stood, his legs still shaky, and walked to the table, sitting opposite Jungkook, avoiding eye contact. The interview proceeded, a blend of professional questions and Taehyung's nervous responses.
Once the interviews concluded, Jungkook dismissed the applicants. Everyone left except Taehyung, who remained standing, his courage unexpectedly bolstered by a surge of remorse.
"I-I would like to apologize," he began, swallowing his pride.
Jungkook raised an eyebrow. "Are you sorry because I'm the CEO, or are you genuinely sorry?"
"Both," Taehyung admitted, his voice barely above a whisper. "I'm truly sorry for how I spoke to you. You didn't deserve that. I hope you can forgive me."
Jungkook stood, and Taehyung braced himself for a reprimand. Instead, Jungkook simply patted his hair.
"It's alright. I understand," Jungkook said, a gentle smile softening his features. Taehyung, surprised by his kindness, looked up, his innocent, confused eyes meeting Jungkook's. Jungkook couldn't help but chuckle at the omega's endearing expression.
"Thank you," Taehyung said, his voice filled with relief. "But please, let me do something to make it up to you. I promise I will do anything."
Jungkook smiled. "I'll think about it."
Overwhelmed with gratitude, Taehyung impulsively hugged Jungkook, who returned the embrace. The unexpected encounter had taken an unexpected turn, leaving both Alpha and Omega with a lingering sense of something…more.
