Chapter 16 - Vampires

Walking at a fast pace right beside Alexa's horse, Edwin tried to maintain a conversation with Alexa, knowing that she would be in pain, he couldn't let her be alone. He was still astonished at her, she didn't show fear of dying and hide the pain he knew she was experiencing, he knew from her eyes blurry as if tears were on the breaking of falling down and for her breathing that was shallow as if deep breaths would cause more of it. Her speech was slow and controlled as if trying to save energy, so much different from when they began the journey.

- So, if you were in Zulcan now what would you be doing? - He asked her, only to have something to talk about.

- Don't know.

- Indulge me please, I would like to know how your life is.

- Why the sudden interest? - She asked tiredly.

- I need to keep you talking with me, once you'll hide from me whatever it is you're feeling.

- Do you want to know what I'm feeling? Or it is better if we cut the chit chat and get to where we are going as fast as we can?

- I would like for you to tell me what it is you're feeling so that I might help ease the pain!

- You can't Edwin! I'm dying that's it, my body is turning on me, my wolf fled, and I won't last long.

- If you needed could you turn?

- I don't believe I could. And there is no way of telling if I forced the turn that I wouldn't end up killing myself faster!

- Point taken. We are not very far from the caves, according to the maps, maybe a day.

- I feel tired, I need to close my eyes.

- Don't do it, Alexa! Keep talking to me! - Asked him with a sudden fear burning his chest. Seeing her so weak awoke something inside of him, something of regret and fear mixed with pride for her and concern maybe love.

- You can't keep me awake an entire day and night. I need to rest.

- Let me see your chest! - He asked, knowing that if the dark veins appeared on her neck that would mean the end was close for her.

- Are you crazy? - Asked her outraged, in a low tone.

- I'm not asking to see your feminine parts, believe me, I saw plenty of those! I want to see the dark veins! Where are they spread? - He explained, and he could've sworn that a pinch of jealousy was showing in Alexa's eyes when he talked about his experience with other women.

She pulled her shirt down from the upper edge for him to see that the dark veins weren't touching her chest.

- Sleep Alexa, I'll take care of you.

She arched a brow but nodded bowing in the saddle to a comfortable position to sleep.
Edwin padded the horse and talked to him about fastening the pace the horse seemed to have understood what he told him because he fastened the pace.

One day and one night were over their heads when he finally awoke Alexa for her to eat and drink, he asked again how was she feeling, she only shrugged her shoulders and returned to the position to sleep.

- Still tired? - He asked.

- Yes. I feel that all my energy is draining away.

- We will get you better soon.

She only gave him a sad smile, as if she already didn't have hope.

- How came that I could convince you to come with me if you don't believe it is possible to cure you? - He asked.

- Edwin, I'm living in a borrowed time and I will take every drop of it to live and get to know a person that I like.

Edwin was astounded by her confession:

- I have a confession to make. - He said and looked at her trying to gather his courage for what he is going to say to her.

Silence fell between them as they continued the journey.

- I didn't think that it was possible once we are so different. But to be truthful I admire you more than I admitted even to myself. I love how you are pure strength not physical but emotional and your wisdom is one of the rarest even among the oldest ones of my species. I didn't think it was possible but I think I am falling in love with you!
