Remember That One Time

New Jersey, 2007

Chanel's POV

I was sitting in class doing my work. Fourth grade really isn't that bad but girls are always messing with me. I stay to myself most days but I'm getting sick of it.

"Why you let her say stuff?" Nae asked.

Of course we go to school together.

I just kept doing my work.

"You need to stand up for yourself." She said.

"If I do I'm gonna get in trouble." I said.

"No you not." She said.

"Yes I will. My mom told me to just ignore them." I said.

"You can't ignore them forever." She said.

I just continued to do my work. Nae knows I'm getting tired of these other girls messing with me and she wants me to stand up for myself and I get that but I'm scared I'll get in trouble.

We ended that class period and I went to my locker.

"Hey baby Carter." I heard.

I rolled eyes as I closed my locker. I turned around.

"What do you want?" I asked as a group of girls stood in front of me.

"Nothing, rich girl." Samantha said.

I laughed.

"That was an insult?" I asked.

The main girl rolled her eyes. Nae popped up beside me. I don't know where she came from. I shook my head and started to walk away until somebody touch my shoulder.

"Don't touch me." I said eyeing her.

"What you gonna do about it?" She asked and pushed me.

I looked at Nae and she looked at me like if you don't I will so I did what I had to do. I punched the girl in the face and we started fighting.

I could hear Nae cheering me on but I just blacked out after that.

We ended up sitting in the principle's office waiting for my grandma. Apparently somebody tried to jump in and Nae took care of that. My parents went out of town so I was staying with my grandma.

"Thanks for having my back." I said to Nae.

"Anytime but the way you went in on that girl you didn't need me." She said laughing. "I didn't know you could go in like that."

I shrugged. I didn't know either. We heard the door open and we looked.

"Mr. Carter, please have a seat." The principal said.

Uhm, when did he get back?

"Is the other Mr. Carter coming?"

"No, my brother couldn't make it. I'm here for both of them." My dad said.

The principal told my dad we got into a fight and we were suspended for three days. After they talked we got our stuff and left.

We got into the truck. My dad didn't say anything.

"Daddy." I said.

"Why did you get into a fight?" He asked.

"I had to stand up for myself and she pushed me first." I said.

My dad shook his head.

"What about you Nae?" He said.

"A girl jumped in. I wasn't gonna let her get jumped."
