Max managed to feel more comfortable at the Byers' apartment. She was still struggling to handle all her emotions, but Joyce was so nice with her that it was hard to regret her past life. And this new life was having an impact on her mood, she was feeling happier than before, she wasn't stressing anymore to go back home as she knew it was safe. But not telling her friends or Jane about that was making her feel guilty. It was like if she was lying to them, but she didn't want them to look at her with pity, so she preferred keeping it for herself for now. She arrived as usual at the High School and separated from Will to join Beverly who was waiting for her on their low wall.
- "Hey, how are you?" Bev asked.
- "I'm fine," Max smiled, sitting next to her and taking the cigarette she was holding out.
- "You've looked fine for days now, it's pleasant to see. What changed?"
- "Oh, you know, I guess dating Jane makes me happy."
It wasn't completely a lie, dating Jane was making her happy, but not living anymore with Neil and Susan relieved her of a big weight. The two girls turned their heads and saw Jane walking with Lucas and Troy in direction of the building. None of them noticed them which amused them.
- "How is Jane?" Bev asked.
- "I don't know. Stressed."
- "She doesn't look okay. She is rapidly tired or out of breath in sport."
- "Not just in sport."
Bev frowned.
- "I mean, I don't need to draw you what we were doing, but after, she was breathing heavily, I mean, I really thought she was going to pass out," Max explained.
- "It was for your first time?"
- "No," the redhead chuckled.
- "Why is it funny?" Bev smiled.
- "For nothing," she continued, still laughing.
Bev frowned more but lightly chuckled, not understanding why it was so funny. Once their cigarettes finished, the two girls went inside to begin their day with the others.
As usual, the group of friends joined each other for lunch time. Dustin and Mike were saying stupid things when Bev decided to ask:
- "Jane?"
- "Yes?"
- "Why did Max laugh when I asked her if you almost passed out for your first time?"
Jane raised her eyebrows and nodded, cutting her steak, before turning her head to Max, squinting, which made laugh her girlfriend.
- "I think I know why she laughed, and it's mean."
- "No, it's not mean, but you didn't pass out for our first time, it's true!"
- "Wait," Dustin intervened. "You are dating!?"
The entire table frowned before looking at him.
- "Are you living in a cave?" Lucas joked.
- "Why does everybody know except me!?"
- "That's what we all are wondering!" Mike stated.
- "Damn. Since when?"
- "I don't know. We've been dating for a month or something like that," Max answered.
- "I'm so blind! Congrats!"
- "Thanks," Jane chuckled.
- "Now that things are clear for everyone," Mike said. "I have some questions for you."
- "What kind of questions?"
- "Who is on top?"
- "Oh, that kind of questions! You know we won't answer, right? Bev still don't know why Max is laughing about our first time!"
- "I think I understood," Bev said.
- "Don't develop."
- "I won't."
- "I'm sure it's Max," Mike affirmed.
- "If you want."
Mike pouted which made laugh his friends. Dustin couldn't believe that he missed that, and, apparently, the entire school knew about this! He could be so stupid sometimes, but he was happy for them, they looked happy together.
Meanwhile in the High School, Abigail was taking her books in her locker when she got joined by her friend, Alban.
- "Hey, what's up? How is it going with Troy?" the blonde boy asked.
- "I stop," Abigail said.
- "What? No, he just needs to realize he loves you and not Jane, I mean, Jane is a dyke, it's disgusting!"
- "He doesn't love me. It will never work anyway."
- "Why not!? Just suck his dick and, believe me, it will work!"
- "He is gay."
- "What!?"
- "I think he is. He didn't tell me but...I'm pretty sure he is."
- "Ew, no way! I'm taking my shower right next to him after sport! He can't be a fag!"
Abigail just shrugged before walking away. Alban was furious. If Troy was gay, he would have to discover it, no matter what. Maybe at the Winter dance he would see something.
