I
was sitting on my couch, you know, just watching Grey's Anatomy, and bawling like a little bitch.......then I get a call from my best friend Blake.
Blake: Hey Roxy.
Roxy: What Blake?
Blake: Are you crying?
Roxy: I'm watching our show so what?
Blake: I need a huge favor.
Roxy: Wassup?
Blake: I need you to help me with something.
Roxy: I get that. But what is it Blake?
Blake: Ineedyoutocometomyneighborshouseandhelpmybabysit
Roxy: English please.
Blake: I need you to come to my neighbors house and help me babysit.
Roxy: For how long?
Blake: A week.
Roxy: Fine. I'll be there soon.
Blake: Thanks.
I hung up and packed a bag full of anything else I might need. I got in my pickup and drove to Blake's house. I parked in his neighbors driveway and knocked on the door. Blake opened the door after a few minutes and I seen a happy baby crawling behind him.
Roxy: Looks like you have everything under control. You sure you need my help.
Blake: Yup. Because I dont know how to change diapers or feed them.
Roxy: Here. Take my bag and I'll help you. And watch behind you.
Blake left up the stairs and I looked around in the kitchen for bottles of formula since the baby looked only a few months old. I finally found them and I grabbed a bottle and frabbed the formula from the cupboard. I made a bottle and sat down on the couch when Blake came back downstairs.
Blake: Need anything?
Roxy: Yeah. Give me a rag or paper towels. Then go get one of my shirts from my bag. They should be at the top.
Blake: You got it.
Blake got me everything and sat down on the couch next to me. I fed Amanda and let her crawl around on the floor for a while.
Blake: So you kind telling me why I got all this stuff and you didn't even use it?
Roxy: Because nine times out of ten, babies cough and spit out the formula. I wanted something to clean it up with and a shirt to change into afterwards.
Blake: How do you know so much about babies?
Roxy: I think Amanda needs a nap. She's rubbing her eyes. Wanna go put her down?
Blake: You can.
Roxy: You seem like you're afraid of her. Are you?
Blake: Of a baby? No way.
Roxy: Then go put the baby down for a nap. Since you aren't afraid of her.
Blake: Okay maybe I am.
Roxy: There's nothing to be scared of. C'mon.
I went to go pick up Amanda and took her back to the couch.
Roxy: Here. Hold her.
Blake: I'm fine. Really. I'll pass.
Roxy: Blake. She isn't gonna hurt you. Why are you afraid?
Blake: I'm afraid I'll break her.
Roxy: You won't. See. Just try.
Blake: Fine.
I put Amanda in Blake's arms and watched as he barely moved side to side making Amanda fall asleep quicker.
Roxy: See.
Blake: Yeah. I guess it isn't so bad.
Roxy: Wanna carry her to the nursery?
Blake: Nope.
Roxy: Blake. You aren't gonna break her.
Blake: Baby steps.
Roxy: Then I will be back.
I got up and carried Amanda to her nursery and set her down in her crib. I covered her with a pink blanket and she was out like a light. I walked back downstairs and sat next to Blake on the couch.
Blake: She okay.
Roxy: She's totally fine.
Blake: Don't avoid my question.
Roxy: What question?
Blake: How do you know so much about kids?
Roxy: I don't want to answer that.
Blake: C'mon Rox. We've been friends for how long?
Roxy: I don't even remember.
Blake: Then talk to me Rox.
Roxy: Blake. Some things are just better left unsaid. Unspoken.
Blake: What is it? Roxy. You don't hide things from me. And I don't hide things from you. Talk to me.
Roxy: Blake. I don't think I can tell you this.
Blake: Well it's not like you killed somebody. It can't be that bad.
Roxy: Do you remember that summer when I went to go stay with my Grandparents?
Blake: Yeah. You were supposed to go to Florida with me, but you didn't.
Roxy: Blake. I didn't actually go stay with my grandparents.
Blake: I'm lost. So if you didn't go stay with your grandparents, then who'd you stay with?
Roxy: I didn't go anywhere. I stayed home.
Blake: That doesn't explain anything.
Roxy: Blake I was pregnant. I blurted without thinking.
Blake: What?!
Roxy: It was this kid from school, he moved though. He said he wasn't ready, not that I was, but he didn't even want the kid. He wanted me to get an abortion, but I didn't. So that summer when you left, I had a little boy. End of story.
Blake: Where is he?
Roxy: He's with my grandparents. I got see him at least once every two weeks. He's two now. And once I graduate, then I'm vonna get a job and an apartment and I'll take over raising him.
Blake: What's his name?
Roxy: Jackson.
Blake: What's his last name?
Roxy: Gray.
Blake: You gave him my last name?
Roxy: He's your kid Blake.
Blake: That isn't Scientifically possible.
Roxy: Blake. We had sex at that Halloween party.
Blake: That was you?
Roxy: That was before I knew you.
Blake: So it was like right before we started hanging out.
Roxy: Yeah.
Blake: Why didn't you tell me?
Roxy: We had just met. I couldn't say you got me pregnant without you thinking I was crazy. And Blake we were 16. You didn't want or need a kid.
Blake: Can I meet him?
Roxy: You really want to?
Blake: Yeah. And if its okay with you, after we graduate, can I help raise him?
Roxy: You think you're ready for that?
Blake: I mean. Yeah. I have a job now and it will be easier on you. And I have always wanted kids so its not like I do t want any.
Roxy: Well maybe you can meet him next weekend. I was gonna go then.
Blake: Can I?
Roxy: Of course. But you know you're gonna have to get rid of your fear of holding kids before then.
Blake: Then I better start practicing.
Roxy: You can start right now. Amanda is awake.
Blake: Oh, yay.
