The city was beautiful. Although a military based area, as Askari said, it seemed the military was more in the mountains then actual city.
With this new profound friendship, Kai seemed at ease when he walked next to me.
The city was definitely a land of peace. Families walked through the streets with a sort of calm. A calm that made me feel a lot...safer.
I wasn't used to feeling safe. I should feel wary, but I don't.
"How do you like the city M.J.?" I blinked, forgetting I had company.
"It's not like the mortal realm." This made Kai snort. I have him an elbow to the guts in return.
"I understand," Askari said quietly. I looked at him, not knowing what to say.
We turned around a corner, heading towards a large hall.
"It's an arena," Askari said from beside me.
"Why does it look like a community hall?"
"I don't know, makes it more appealing."
I shrugged. What would it matter to me, they'll have to take me home soon.
We continued walking towards the arena, until we were ten meters away from the door.
"Do you want to go inside?" Askari asked.
Before I could answer, Kai cut in.
"I don't think this is a good idea."
"We'll be fine."
"But-"
"No. I want M.J. to see this."
"What's so great about it anyway?" I asked. It looked like an ordinary arena, what could possibly be so special about it?
"You'll see."
I followed Askari, Kai reluctantly following, paranoia seeming to take over him. I watched my sides and back at all times. Askari noted this, but luckily didn't question.
I looked around the room, noting the lights where torches, not actual lights. I also saw about five weaponry stands, close to a dais.
I suddenly realised that it was oddly quiet for an arena. So quiet that I wasn't surprised it was empty.
I stepped forward, almost eager to examine the weapon stands. Askari followed me forward, whilst Kai closed and locked the door.
"Hello, friends."
A chill broke down my spine as my companions froze after drawing their swords.
"Don't move," Askari ordered the angel through gritted teeth.
"I told you this was a bad idea," Kai hissed.
"Not the time, Kai, not the time."
One by one, the lights flicked out. . .
All except the ones around the dais.
And atop the dais stood a man with dark, ragged hair and dangerous looking tattoos. I would almost call him handsome, his face edged with sharp features.
"Halo," Kai seethed.
This man, Halo, sent a shiver down my spine.
"Hello, dear brother," Halo replied with a sly smirk.
I edged my way subtly towards the weapons.
"Now now, M.J.," Halo tssked, "no need for that approach."
I snarled at him, swiping some throwing knives off the table and launching them into the air.
The only warning was a gleam of silver as it flew through the air.
Halo caught the dagger, a few inches from his face, an unimpressed smirk on his face.
He didn't see the second one I threw. It embedded itself into the wall, skimming his ear.
Both Kai and Askari looked at me. My hand shot to my necklace, just to make sure it was there, before I prepared to throw the next knife.
...but Halo wasn't there. He was gone. Just like that.
Kai seemed intent to search every shadow he could, but a small voice in the back of my head told me that something else was wrong.
It was a dreading feeling in the pit of my stomach, nagging at me about something.
All I know is that Page is safe. For now. It's a sister bond we picked up ages ago, able to tell if the other was in danger or not.
"Lynn said she will keep an eye out for Halo." The journey back was silent.
~~~
I entered the house and headed to where Page had been sleeping.
I opened the door, hoping to see Page reading a picture book or something. What I didn't expect was for the bed to be messed up and empty.
"Page?" I called, I continued walking down the hall.
"Page?!"
I heard a giggle a few rooms away. I started speed walking, trying not to run.
I opened large black doors. Probably Charlie's room. Page will be in there.
I pushed the door open, striding into the room to see a shirtless Askari, it was a shock, I mean, sure he probably trains without a shirt, but I have never seen him without a black shirt on.
"Hey, M.J., what are you doing in here?"
I turned on my heel and slammed the door after saying a loud,
"Nope."It was more to myself then to him. I pushed out his drool worthy body from my mind, Page was my only priority.
I entered the next room.
Phew, Charlie and Page.
"M.J. M.J. M.J.!" Page was squealing.
The little girl ran from Charlie's lap to my arms. I picked her up, holding her tightly.
"How was the city?"
"It was...interesting." I would have to talk to Charlie about Halo and Page's safety.
I put the jumpy Page down, plopping her on the bed and turned to Charlie.
"Can we talk? Alone?"
He nodded, messing up Page's hair after leaving.
"I heard about Halo," he said, "I can look after her, M.J., I've slayed armies before. Protecting one child isn't hard."
"Page is my life, Charlie. If she so much as gets hurt, I will hunt you down and return the favour," I said calmly. It was crucial he knew how much I meant it.
"Relax, M.J., Page is safe with us," she may be safe for now, but I could feel it. Something was going to happen later. Whether it's years or days, I would never stop looking after Page."
