You were born in 1983, in the London borough of Lambeth. Life was good for you at the start, or that's what you thought, you were a child and life usually seems great to children.
Kids rarely see the dark truth to life...
Or they do, but they just choose to ignore it.
You were too young to understand that the drinks that your dad drunk weren't child-friendly. You didn't know, that when he'd down an entire bottle of the golden brown liquid, he wasn't stumbling around the room and shouting as a silly joke to make you laugh.
You were too young to know the little pills that he took weren't little pieces of candy or that when he pushed a needle into his arm, he wasn't showing you a magic trick. You always wondered where the liquid inside the syringe went.
And you were too young to understand why when dad would get angry mom's nose would bleed, or her eye would become purple and bruised.
You learned a lot of dark realities when you were too young.
At first, it was just you, your mom, and your dad, then in December 1988, your little sister Olivia was born. She was the cutest baby in the world to you, and ever since she was born you felt a need to protect her.
March 1989
"Mummy? Where are you going?" You asked wandering into the hallway seeing your mother with her suitcase about to walk out of the apartment.
Your mother was rather beautiful, she had long blond wavy hair and gorgeous green eyes that shone in the sunlight.
Her face was one of those faces that people found hard to forget.
"Shh, s-stay q-quiet" your mom replied anxiously looking around the room.
She had another dark black eye. It wasn't a surprise to you. You were used to them by now. In fact, you weren't sure if you had seen her without some kind of bruise on her face, you were too young to understand why she was so bruised.
"Where are you going?" You asked again hugging your Winnie the pooh teddy bear close to your chest and swaying around on the spot.
"Mummy's going on holiday, but I'll be back soon ok?" She whispered leaning down and kissing you on the cheek.
"Can me and liv come?" You asked rocking forwards and back on your heels, gazing up at her with your big Y/e/c eyes.
"Not yet my love" She murmured bending down to your side.
"Mummy needs to get settled first, then I'll come back for you.""Will Winnie be able to come?" You questioned, referring to your bear.
"Of course he can... Now, you can't tell daddy I'm going away... Do you understand?" Your mother asked gently.
"Yes," you smiled.
"Good girl... I need you to remember, I love you so, so much... I love you and Olivia so much... I promise I'll come back for you" She promised planting one more kiss on your cheek before hurrying out the door.
You're mother never lied, and she always kept her promises... You thought she'd keep this one too... And you stuck to that belief for months until that day...
