1. The depths of Hell were not engulfed by fire and flames as in other tales of yore. The three human arrivals had awoken in a magnificent labyrinth of massive caves, lit by giant glowing crystals and looking down on red trees beside a hotchpotch of houses and smaller buildings. Ilaria could not comprehend their jeopardy and decided to quarrel with her younger brother, the one who had caused all their misgivings by getting she and Ennio banished and summoning the Devil of all beings into the mortal world, only to lose the kingdom in the process.
Having finally realized where his actions had put him by the scruff of his tunic in Ilaria's fist, the disgraced king Vico did the merciful thing in telling his sister that he was the one who had put Ennio under a spell that caused him to attempt to kill Ilaria under Vico's command. The sudden and terrible truth was a shock to Ilaria, who was on the verge of hitting Vico, only to be pushed back by Ennio.
The peasant thief was wise enough to show how bickering among siblings would not make their current situation any better. The trio had no other option besides following Ennio through the tunnels of the underworld in search of a way out, despite it being the place where the souls of the damned were meant to stay for eternity. Neither of the three wanted to believe in eternity down in the bowels of the universe, instead of remaining persistent in wanting to return to Earth.
