As expected, I hear from Asahi that their coach doesn't let him off easy today after skipping practice yesterday. I spend the next few minutes sitting at my desk at home with my phone in hand, responding to every message he sends. Somehow, I can hear his tone with every speech bubble that appears, imagining how dejected he must be feeling at home. I do my best to reassure him, hoping that at least words of comfort make him feel a little bit better. Twiddling my thumbs as I think of a response to his last reply, I'm distracted by an incoming call. Asahi's name shows up on my phone screen to my surprise, and I answer.
"... Hello?"
"Hi! H-hi, (Y/N)."
"Hi, Asahi! Did you call by accident?"
"Oh, no..." he trails off, his voice sounding deeper and marginally garbled over the connection.
"Oh, what happened?" I ask, smiling quietly at myself. This is the first time I've ever heard his voice over the phone, and for some reason, it makes my heart jump.
"Um, nothing really... I'm just at home."
"Oh, me too. I'm doing homework right now."
"Ah, I'm sorry! Are you busy right now?"
"No, no! It's okay. Are you feeling a little bit better now?"
"Oh, well... it'll be okay. Talking about it with you really helps. Um..."
"Hm?"
"Um, it's... nice to hear your voice."
I start to blush. Though my heart soars momentarily, the feeling is suddenly washed over by the intruding thought that I won't be seeing him very often for a while.
"(Y/N)?" The sound of Asahi's voice again brings me back to reality, and I stumble out a response.
"Oh, sorry, um... it's really nice to hear your voice too."
"Is something wrong?"
"No... I was just thinking about how weird it's gonna be, not walking home with you for a bit."
