My grandparents nearly fell out of their recliners, gasping at the man on T.V. who had just introduced himself as happily married..to his loving husband.
I exchanged glances with my sister before getting up and going outside. The dense forest trails surrounding the house made for a great escape from them. I got tired of walking, dropped to my knees. Cried.
I didn't recognize the woods when I stood up. Wiped my eyes again.
Was it this dark a second ago?
A whisper in my left ear summoned goosebumps through my body and I trembled.
I turned around and around.
don't panic
and around and around.
not panicking!
and then saw it. An orange glow.
A campfire? How did I not see it before? And where did it come from?
It's not far, I got there quickly.
"I don't recognize this boy."
My body activated and I sprung to my feet. Something's off.
How long have I been by the fire? Did I fall asleep?
The grumpy face of that beanie-girl, her thick accent I couldn't place.
Good god I am uncultured.
More people were there, others besides accent lady.
OOO! SWEDISH!
My heavy breathing was louder than the crackling fire.
The buff guy in my face- well, above it, looked down on me. He glared into my eyes.
Will we kiss?
The thought pulled the corner of my mouth into a half grin. The neck of my shirt balled up in his fist, he raised me slightly to bring me to my tippy toes.
His other hand grabbed my face and squeezed so that my smirk turned into fish-lips.
"Use the shroud." He called over his shoulder.
Impatience, pain? His voice sounds older than he looks.
His eyes glanced over at the Swedish girl who looked put out by the command. He looked back at me, my fish lips.
My nostrils flared at the sudden, overwhelming scent of ash. My eyes stung.
Everything is black. How long will it last?
